This. I remember breaking down in tears about how I had no friends in 3rd grade. Today I don't care so much. My honest goal in life is to get a decent paying cubicle-type job of minimal human interaction, so that I may spend the rest of my time in a home all by myself, with money to spend on collections and entertainment all for myself.

Being introverted is ok, but what you're describing doesn't sound healthy.

Um, why do you think I have nearly 30k posts across the various forums I visit?

its funny and sad at the same time when you see dudes here that have forty or fifty thousand posts. just think of the amount of time it would take just to type out that many posts, its fair to say anandtech has more than its share of loners...

Depends on the kind of post. If one makes posts without giving them much thought or reconsideration, it's easy to make 30 posts a day within an hour or two, which isn't any more a time waste than a movie or so. Personally, half the time I reply to somebody I get nervous and hit the back button, and on top of that there's a lot of threads I read that I don't feel like providing an opinion on, so what may look like an average poster may actually be an even more pathetic individual.

<--- ~100k posts across dozens of forums over ten years.

I'm a happy loner :)

It depends on the people around me. People don't realize how big of a difference the environment/demographics makes.

Even the most extroverted American would be a loner in a town full of Buddhist monks for example. There are some parts of the country I know I would love. Here I'm not sure why I stick around. Just for my family, and a few friends eh. Like I said, happy loner. I've met about as many people I would like in this area as I can.

Maybe you just aren't around the right people. What type of people do you like?

Not nerd/jock, think demographics.

pretentious city people
poor city people
hick country people
white collar pretentious people
white collar no balls people
blue collar crack a beer after work people

What I really like are blue collar people who are smart and have their shit together. The college yuppee's and their massive loans and complaining about salary like $100k/year is a birthright even though none of them could start a business have gotten old long ago.

People whose lives are a hectic blur of drama also wear on me.

Definitely would love blue collar areas. There is a town where most of the money comes from people who work at the nuclear power plant in the middle of nowhere. Now THAT is a cool town, to me anyway, to hang out and meet people. I've found regular everyday people to be the most honest. I'm sick of people trying to be extraordinary at the expense of all their friends/would backstab anyone to prove they are extraordinary, etc.

this is kind of weird; i'v been a loner most of my life, but i guess that's just how others would describe me. i actually crave friendship and attention just as much as the next person, but i find it impossible to find people like me.

Depends. I reckon have quite a few reasonably good friends and a healthy number of very good friends, but a lot of the time I just prefer spending time alone. It means I don't really make new friends as easily among other things, but for me the trade-off is worth it, I reckon.

even so, to get to 50,000 that still amounts to years and years of evenings spent posting, im afraid theres just no way to make that look good....

I was going to answer this poll, but then decided doing so would be too much social interaction.

I have friends locally and a gf that lives with me, so not a loner but I do like minimizing people's bullshit as much as possible. I've got online friends I play games with which is usually enough. Socially I do well since its part of the job (4th year med school) but because I have to talk to people all day long I enjoy my time alone.

I want to be a loner.

But I'm a parent, so I'm never alone. I interact face to face with at least 50 people a day and about that many over the phone while at work. So I don't get to be alone there either.

I can't wait for lil rudeguy to be 18 so I can move to my trailer in the desert.

I don't think I'm a "loner". I am friendly, but not someone who has many "friends".

isn't there some really wise saying about someone who has many friends has no real friends?

Or maybe that was on a fortune cookie...

Even for a "nerd" forum, I am shocked at how lopsided those votes are. Something like 67-9 for yes. WOW.

I can easily enjoy myself without the company of others.
However, I certainly have friends and will gladly spend an evening with them instead of by myself.

Generally I prefer to be alone, since I still have my fair share of social contact via internet, but I don't mind RL company either.

I always had a small group of friends but they keep changing according to who i interact with. First there was HS friends, then college now mostly just people from work. I hate partys and such. hanging out with friends, I prefer playing sports, board games or just going out for dinner.
