The thing that irks me is, aren't Nvidia and AMD supposed to certify these AIBs' graphics cards for reliability and a good enough cooling solution that prevents the fans from sounding like a scary loud jet engine? Even the XFX RX 580 I had wasn't as loud in normal use as the newer GPUs I have now (3090 and RX 6800).

What the heck went wrong with this industry? When did it become acceptable to sell super expensive noise pollution devices to consumers? Why should I as a GPU user have to mess with fan profiles or undervolting to experience a relatively quiet gaming experience?

Are you running with no frame cap or something? Not sure what model cards you have specifically, but if you are running with vsync on, they should not be overly loud as their power draw goes down significantly. Also, the AMD control panel has one button undervolting, and you can use Radeon Chill to reduce power usage more.

It can all depend on the software, the games too. I picked up a card game on steam recently called Mahokenshi. Fun game but even the reviewer who put me on to it mentioned it was ramping up the fans on his 2080. Well, it does on my 2060S too. Even when running vsync. The menus are ok but the game itself has both fans running at 2300-2500rpm.

If you have the thermal headroom, use the fan control app to slow the fans down.

It's on github https://github.com/rem0o/fancontrol.releases

Ha, because benchmarks!

Seriously though, cooling like 300W of power usage takes some air. It sucks and is a reason I run a 6800 and religiously use Radeon Chill. If I get to the point where I need the full card for ~100fps I guess I'll need a new card that I can run slowly (sanely)? lmao and smh.
That describes my RX 6800 usage and mentality perfectly. Only times my system and GPU get near their power limits is when I use ray tracing, which isn't often at all. For my eyes, RT shadows and lighting do nothing for me, in most games. Reflections are about the only worthwhile feature. And after seeing how good a job they did with reflections in Atomic Heart without RT, it makes me think even that is something I could easily leave behind.

On a ROFLcopter down side note. That capframex tried to pimp the reflections as glorious nvidia ray tracing on Twitter, before he found out the devs didn't implement it. What a shill and douche that guy is.

I think Igor's card needs new paste and pads if it hasn't been done already. My XFX QICK RX 6800 is the most overbuilt card I have had since my Red Devil Vega 56. Heat and noise are non issues.

It could have been the extra heat from the large CPU heatsink. My CPU fan was running at 900 RPM coz I connected it to the chassis fan header and it was monitoring mobo temp. Changed it to monitor CPU temp and now the CPU heat should get dissipated better. Haven't checked Quake RTX and the Titanic demo again.

Thanks I'd forgotten about that program, already had it downloaded but I don't think I've messed with it. I may use it on TW Warhammer3, that game makes no sense how hard it hits the gpu fans at times. I can't stand to play for long.

Is it safe to buy graphics cards again or are they still overpriced?
How did the new intel cards compare?
Nvidia cards are fairly overpriced. Radeon RX 6000 series cards can be had on sale at a somewhat acceptable price plus a free game depending on whatever promotion AMD is running at the time.

Prices dropped down last fall. You can still find some AMD 6000 series cards for way below their original MSRP. The 7900 XT is also being seen for below MSRP.

If you really want nVidia, you are kind of out of luck. Most are still being sold for MSRP (over priced for performance), rather than on sale.

Chill with the sexual assault analogies and references. That's not cool. It's the tech forums, a little decorum is required.

Checked Newegg and of the 30 series sold by them, only the 3070 Ti is available at it's original MSRP. There's also a 3070 at $499 but it also doesn't have free shipping. Nothing above the 3070 Ti either. GA102 appears to be gone for real this time.

I keep getting this image of rats scurrying around looking for the last few food morsels available.

A 3060 using GA104 isn't new actually. What's new would be it having GDDR6X.

Great. Another version of the 3060 to further confuse buyers.

This meme helps explain why GPU prices stay high.

ywdoc33jilma1.jpg

I was an Intellvision kid. But this really hits to the core of the issue. These punk kids are convinced they need 144fps to game now. The vast majority of them haven't figured out, that they are going to suck no matter how many fps they have. ;) So they overpay for GPUs thinking they need it to game properly.

Some do it for internet points and/or street cred with their friends. Regardless of the motivation, they continue to pay these jacked up prices, ensuring we are not going to see better value again.

I can't blame you boomers for buying expensive GPUs though. You wrinkly buggers don't have much time left. Gotta game it up in luxury while you can. :p

I can see it coming.
Rats, "another morsel over there".
Nvidia, "the slower the reflexes, the higher the fps needed"

Ironically he's using it with the correct original meaning of the word isn't that funny. :smilecat:

rape and pillage: the commission of acts of rape and plunder on a large scale, esp. by members of an invading army. Hence in extended use: despoilment, destruction, or defilement of something, esp. for profit.

and the forums could do with better smilies instead of emojs.

If they sell all they produce, then I'd say you are right.

I know I suck, but I cannot enjoy games below 100ish fps anymore. And I grew up playing games well below 30fps. I would consider 1080p144hz as budget now, with any entry level PC being able to run that. 60hz and 75hz needs to die.

Doesn’t matter if it is single player or multiplayer, low frame rate makes Jack a dull boy. Shoot, I don’t even like browsing this forum below 120hz. :p
