Seems like you take MMO's very seriously?

Quite the opposite. I have fun with them. You on the other hand sound as though you take them very seriously because you want one for "hardcore" people such as yourself, not those *barf* lowest common denominator types.

Go play Call of Duty.

Best MMO EVER was Star Wars Galaxies!!!!!!!!!

Yes Pre-CU...

I remember hunting Kryt Dragons and selling the pearls for 6 million credits to Jedi...

This.

And I liked pearls, even though I had a guild I'd hunt them with :)

Had a whole cabinet full of crystals.

But I guess we had several Jedi in it, before they ruined the class.

Was in Mons Vegas on Valcyn, we pretty much had a big town named that near the pod racing track and owned Dantooine.

The Happy Bantha was a funny bar/casino/strip club.

Being able to jump in a X-wing A-wing etc was a blast too with a joy stick, was a dual game almost.

Always had a Alt BH to check the Jedi hunting boards to see if I was visible too, had a whole bounty hunter room with tons of weapons I brought someone I ran into and gave them all away too after CURB.

They were freaking out, I had night sister lances in the entryway, it looked like a castle inside. But I was giving up and told him to take what he wanted.

You knew things were bad when overnight all the buffs house and people left in droves.

You dont HAVE to grind in Rift, but you probably will.
The main quest is mostly mission-based and its pretty interesting too.

Yeah it was SO cool you could design your house how YOU wanted it!

Man...I wish that game would come back!

OP check out ArcheAge. The quest treadmill is there, but you can skip 90% of it and level up via crafting if you want. It's really an outstanding game with a ton of freedom.

The only one I've played that didn't feel like a grind was The Secret World. It has quests but they are higher quality than most MMO's, the kill quests are fun and there is more variety to them and how they work is more interesting. But there are also "Investigation Quests" which are like an adventure game with real puzzles that require either problem solving or a knowledge of latin, mathematics, etc. And if you don't know those things then you google things to try to investigate and eventually solve it. You can just google the solution but doing the investigations is the fun part.

Basically it feels more like a single player RPG because the quests are a step above most MMO's and they are all narrated, all have cutscenes to set them up, and they intertwine with the huge storyline the game has too, which you are also a part of.

You just happen to be doing it with other people wandering around and you will see lots of players in the various hubs. There are also dungeons to run which are done in groups and are pretty entertaining.

The end game is a bit lacking, there is a tiny bit of raiding and there are some hard versions of all the dungeons which you run many times to get uber gear, but this is all secondary to the bulk of the game which is solo questing doing these missions and investigations. In other words, you probably wont play it for more than a few months, but you will likely really enjoy your few months.

What I hear about is, great game except ruined by pay to win business model.

My guild of 12+ years originally from SWG moved to ArcheAge after a couple years in SWTOR and Guild Wars 2, I can't stand ArchAge.

And it's a pay2win game, no thanks.

The new story arc for SWTOR looks good enough to have me playing again...

I think what TC might want is an MMO where the primary game is centered around exploring and killing stuff, rather than monotonous quests being the most efficient way to level or gain stuff. Unfortunately all of the newer MMORPGs are like that.

The first MMORPG I ever played was called Acheron's Call, and there were zero fetch/kill quests. And your exp was gained primarily by exploring and killing stuff or delving into one of the many dungeons designed for players at specific stages of progress. The actual quests in the game rewarded you with special equipment/items. I remember one for an axe, the silifi of crimson stars, you had to find the haft that was located in a certain area, and then you needed to find a blade and craft it. The better quality of the blade, the stronger the axe. And you needed a certain amount of skill to craft it. The quest was repeatable with a waiting period, so a player could redo the quest at different stages of progress for a reliable upgrade. It was a lightning elemental axe, which was an effective damage type against several mobs particularly gigas, of which there are several dungeons that have nothing but gigas.

But yeah, it was a non-grindy way of getting your hands on a really good weapon. I remember another quest for a "bandit" hilt. You could attach the hilt to a dagger or rapier and give it multi-hit capabilities. When I used to play AC, daggers were OP because of the bandit hilt. It was a weapon skill that required the least amount of point investment, and it could out DPS swords or axes because it could strike 3 times once you met a specific skill threshold. I ended up making a melee hybrid build that had self buffing capabilities. Most melee relied on STR as a damage stat, but dagger relied on coordination & quickness, which happens to be the stats that melee defense uses as well, which frees up another primary stat to place in somewhere like focus which is 1 of the 2 stats casters use. So basically, it was a hybrid without giving up any defensive or offensive capabilities. Full melee players (STR+Coordination+Quickness) as main stats had to get their buffs from a bot, when I could buff myself on the spot with the same buffs they were getting from a bot.

Of course Acheron's Call was very grinding in that you usually hunted in a small area and just killed the same mobs over and over as they spawned. Sure, you could move around and hit different areas, but it was still a grind to level to some degree, just like most MMO's. You just didn't grind quests, and instead grinded on mobs.

MMORPG's at least, are all about grinding. Of course it doesn't feel like it if you are having fun. I guess that is the trick, finding one that is fun to level up, despite the repetitive nature.
