Sorry for the digression. Sounded like a mindless P&N rant when I reread it.

More on topic:
Having lived in Taiwan for almost 6 months(about a decade ago though), I can say it's mostly pretty cool there. Of course, language may be a big issue if you only speak English. Taipei was a cool city. Nice mix of the East and the West. Good chinese food, so-so any other types (but there ARE other types). Crazy cab drivers. And one of the few places in the world where you'll see an entire family of four on a scooter. :) Not cheap though.

Nope. You have it backwards.

$1.00 US = $0.77 Euro

I'm an expat living in Mexico since 1995.

Edit: BTW, if you're leaving the US solely because Bush is President, you're an idiot.

What do you like and dislike about living in Mexico?

Where in Mexico do you live?

Thanks
You should visit Mexico for a few weeks. Pay particular attention to the gigantic shantytowns that surround the major cities, and the delightful little green-uniformed guys with machine guns you see everywhere. Take note of the beggars- who are mostly handicapped, elderly women or children; not the beefy, able-bodied poor you see in the US. If you're in Mexico City be sure to visit the Plaza de Tres Culturas - where several hundred unarmed college students were massacred by federales during a rather innocuous demonstration in 1968. When I was there in the late 90s, the government hadn't officially acknowledged it even happened. Don't forget to enjoy a tasty morsel from a street vendor and a cool, refreshing glass of tap water to appreciate Mexico's dedication to sanitation and infrastructure.

Seriously - America is a great country, Bush or not. You've got it good here, and it would take a lot longer than four years for the neocons to truly screw us up. Stay here, quit whining and work to change the things you don't like.

Taiwan is all good, but if one day china switches to overdrive and pwns taiwan, not so good anymore.

It is a P&N rant, as Mill elequently noted, you had it right. A quick search on the OP tells you what you need to know, all P&N posts...

Why is it most P&Ners have their profile disabled? I can almost always spot one when I see that...

Anyways, people who want to leave because their official wasn't elected are supporting everything they tend to hate... Oppression. They actually want their person in power, regardless of the will of the people.

I think we may have a winnar!

I've thought about moving to Australia for a couple years after I finish college, for personal reasons not political. I haven't stayed there for a particularly long time, but its got great culture, great weather, and hot women. I don't know if there are any Aussies on AT to let you know more about it. :D

Edited to fix my smileys :)

Seriously, I can understand people don't like W (I am one of them) but c'mon. This country has made it through 2 centuries of presidents, not all of them good. Four more years with W is not the end of the world. You give him too much credit in saying that he could single-handedly destroy all that is good here. Besides, isn't it our obligation as citizens to work with the elected government (whether you voted for them or not) to implement change for the greater good? Government is all about compromise. If everyone who dislikes the administration leaves, will there be anyone left here to force compromise? Aren't you doing the nation an injustice if you leave and there's no one left to protest against unjust policy?
Just a thought. :)

This is a thinly-veiled gripe thread, what did you expect from this forum? It is also a thinly-veiled attempt at getting people to beg you to stay. If you want to leave then hop a flight and then decide. I'm tired of the whining and gnashing of the teeth. It is a fscking eleciton, it isn't as if they just genocided your entire race. If you are going to leave a country over the outcome of one election, then please do it quickly and get the fvck out. There are plenty of people who want to live here, and we've no time for whiners. In four years George W. won't be President, so why worry? Sheesh.

Thank you for the feed back. I have changed the thread's topic.

I'm sorry, but if a street vendor's stuff makes you sick, Darwin wants to have a word with you...

I lived in Ecuador for years. I really liked it, but like any other country it has its problems. If I was guaranteed a job, I'd live there over the US, but work is hard to find...and the economy is, well, not the greatest. You guys have NO idea what a "bad economy" is until you have the exchange rate go from ~5000/dollar to 25000/dollar within a couple years.:p

The current estimates are 5 to 20 years to use up our entire reserve of oil. With the conservative guess being 10 years.

Currently Bush has not supported proposals to start the transition to alternate fuels. Maybe that will change this term.... But if it doesn't we could see a disaster at the end of his term.

How does this equate to a lot more than four years?

Wait... I get it. You would rather they stay and work to get Bush impeached. Right?

I have no experience with it.... But I hear that all countries are pretty craptacular when you leave the shine of the tourist areas. Just take New Jersey for example. Once you leave Alantic City, it is all a war-torn sh!thole. Yes, I leved there for over 15 years. :)

But I have always been found of Australia. Never knew why. Maybe I am just a criminal at heart. ;)

Therein lies the problem.

Econimical cars are not all the rage. They certainly are not in the big advertisers budget.

And the oil will dry the hell up.

And we will be forced to look at other means.

But wouldn't it be better to have them before it dries up?

If the oil reserves really do dry up (I've been hearing that they are going to for the last 20 years), then the real problem will not be individuals getting around. It will be transporting goods. If there is no oil, there will be no fuel for the large trucks that make most of our lives worth living.

Alright, this is some bull$hit no matter how you rack it up. You can sit back and call the shots in your easy chair, but Americans have always, ALWAYS overcome adversity, no matter how it came at us. You'd have us believe that when all the fossil fuels are consumed, we're going to turn into this entire Mad Max-like populace where you'll have the upper hand driving around in your Toyota Prius telling everyone "I told you so, you gas guzzling morons," while living in the lap of luxury somewhere.

Hey! Newsflash!!! Good or bad, Americans HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL overcome whatever is thrown at us, no matter how dire and no matter how much someone may want to see us fail. If our cars stop running, we'll all be on IT transports or something.

No go on ahead and try to portray me as some kind of uber-patriot or right-wing fanaticist if you so choose, but history speaks for itself. Have our methods always been the best? No. Have we always adapted and overcome, damn straight we have! I'll stay living here thank you.

PS-I've lived abroad as a child and found it interesting. I'd do it again if the work, lifestyle and everything else matched up to my expectations.

If you want to leave, I'm not stopping you. Let me know what country you go to when you get there. I'll be waiting. In the mean tim I accept our form of government as a VERY good one. It's because of that I support OUR president, even if that meant Kerry got elected. It is the will of the people that Bush lead us, if you think it's oppressive, thats ok, the majority disagrees with you. They get their way, you get your say.

While it may be P&N related... It is not a rant.

1. It's P&N, the poster primarly posts there, so they know about it. It's NOT off topic. 2. If you read other threads about leaving the county, you will notice they are ALL after Bush got elected, why should this one be any different? 3. This lack of obvious logic, is yet another reason why I don't post in P&N. I'm sure of course your going to reply by saying it's "coincidence" that the 23585th thread about leaving the US in a handfull of days is the ONE that was truely about finding a new place to live. However, I'll make the logical jump and say this is election related.

It isn't P&N.

Everyone except the original poster brought politics into it.

It may be driven by politics.

It may even been meant to incite politics.

But it is not politics until we made it so.

I do not care why the poster made the thread. If we didn't fall into the political discusion, it would have slid right of the page never to return.

We are the ones that need to go into P&N. Not the poster.

Learn to place blame where it belongs.

This makes 0 sense. If it IS driven by politics, and it WAS to incite politics, how the fvck did WE bring politics to this? But again, I'm making the logical jump here, your the one with a blind eye.

Let me ask you this, which is more likely?

This is a potitical thread.
This isn't a political thread.

The replied to the thread answer the question. Why did everyone assume it was? Because it IS. Why not ask the OP if your unsure? I noticed they aren't answering why themselves...

Now, none of that really matters, why?

Because look at all the political trash that leaked into OT over the last week. Heck I used to not mind some cross over topic because people in P&N are very obtuse. Political discussion in OT always seemed more level headed, on both sides. Read forum issues, there were more than one thread about it. But yet, still we see political inspired threads all over the place. "oh but this is a funny post, not political" "oh, this is about expatriots, not politics" "oh this is that IAMSORRY web site, not politics" Whatever.

Why not just post this in P&N, since I'm sure there are more expatriots there?

Gee, where to start with this? Oh, I know, let's just do it in like style.

You should open your eyes and take a serious look at the US since you're there. Pay particular attention to all of the ghettos, dilapidated housing projects and high crime rates in any major city, in fact, why not start with the Capitol of that great nation. Take note of the beggars - who are mostly drunks, druggies and other marginalized losers who've given up on life, not real people who are poor and in need like in Mexico. Also, you'll love how the moralists and do-gooders have finally managed to legislate every facet of your life so that personal responsibility is no longer a bothersome issue. Oh, and if you ever get a chance to visit an Indian reservation where the former natives of this land have been incarcerated, don't forget to think about how a government committed genocide upon a people, and still denies that it was genocide to this day.

See, that was easy, and there's a lot more disparaging remarks about domestic issues and foreign interventions I could make if I bothered.
