are the opteron 165s still the bee's knees?

are they still the dual core chip to get for overclocking?
i'm also open to single cores if there's anything besides the 'obvious' 3200 venice to go after...

My CCBWE 0534SPMW Opteron 165 oc's to 2.8 (1.5v) but I didn't push it any higher than that. I don't know about the current crop of opterons but 06xx X2's are overclocking well.
 
Yeah 165s or 170s. I almost went with a 170 but I got a much better deal on a 165 that was pre-tested past 2.6ghz. See if you can find one with a good stepping before buying. If you want to do luck of the draw, you can pick up 165s for under $280 on Monarch.
 
is there any way of determining stepping before buying new?
i mean are there stores that will sell certain guranteed steppings or should i be looking on the used market?

Newegg sometimes lists steppings, and always lists OPNs. You can take the OPN and search for it here to find the stepping. Newegg lists different steppings separately.

thanks for the link. the only stepping info i'm getting off the 165 OPN is 'E6' which doesn't seem to match any part of info from anyone's info in their sig...

As time goes by OC'ing will be naturally harder, unless a corporate-level marketing strategy gets involved. Why? Because with maturing manufacturing comes improved binning.

That's another possibility for sure. But I'd think at that point AMD would be better off lowering the prices of their line up and pushing higher model # out. (and phasing out the low tier chips) People will be happier to pay less money for higher-grade chips.

Either way it's the same thing and I surely hope the prices will go down so we all can afford to have a 3.0GHz dualies. 😀
