Thank you for your honesty, if we had a witness protection program then I'd gladly enroll you.

As tempting as it was, I didn't partake in the deal because:
1) The last thing I need to do is SPEND $200 in order to SAVE $50. I'm broke because I have spent thousands of dollars since 1998 trying to "save" money by spending it.
2) The TB thread mentioned this was a fraudulent/edited/hacked coupon, it's not worth taking a chance using that coupon.

Well the whole carfax thing is bullsh1t because I have read their TOS SEVERAL times and actually e-mailed their support. They said you can run as many faxes as you want for friends/family as long as you are NOT MAKING A COMMERCIAL PROFIT.

Sometimes you have a stubborn moderator. Had I known mods were reading my PMs I would have used AIM a lot more, because I do relate private information and other things to a few members of this site and I expected more. Oh well. Maybe it is time to move on...

It seems to me that if you were trying to be"Civil" that you would have either pm'd or emailed the Mods with your question rather than come here to OT and start an accusatory thread,after all they are the ones who decide forum policy and what puinshments are meted out and to whom for violations of forum rules.The Mods decide, not the membership, so your thread seems rather out of order to me.

I stand corrected on the point that you didn't start the thread but to single out two members here and basically call them out on the carpet as if you were in charge here doesn't seem in the least "civil" it smacks of disrespect to both the staff here and to Rossman and NFS4.

If they aren't private they shouldn't be CALLED "Private Messages"

If the Mods are able to read them, it should be POSTED that the PM's are NOT "PM'S".

I would feel violated having ANYONE read something a assumed was just between me and the person I sent it to.

Btw, many of the comments in this thread smack of entitlement and show a real lack of understanding of what a HUGE job it must be to administer these forums and how much the bandwidth costs to run them.People go on and on about the $30 yearly subscription fee as if they had to take out a second on their homes to pay it.How easily some people forget that the staff here work for FREE and that overall they do a damn fine job of patroling these boards ! Our For Sale/For Trade board is the best on the web and our HD forum carries more posts on bargain computer hardware than I ever see anyplace else.

So, because Microsoft gives people their Hotmail accounts for free, they should have the right to read the e-mails in those accounts?

While RossMAN and NFS4 were NOT given special treatment in this matter, you're fooling yourself if you don't think certain people get special treatment on these boards. Whether it's because they are mods, work for Anandtech in other ways or they know the admins personally, they do get special treatment. Something that I found to be very interesting in this matter was Compuwiz's and Ulfwald's threads regarding donations of money. I'm sure they were able to do so because of one of the reasons I mentioned earlier, but I remember reading a thread about this before and WombatWoman of all people displayed her disappointment about when she made a thread about donations for her healthcare bills and that one was locked.

I'm not saying that the admins of this site aren't allowed to do these things because, well, it's their site and they can run it as they want. What I am saying is that you can't defend the notion that favortism is not conducted here because it's just the opposite.

Simple. By way of money one should recieve some semblence of true privacy. Granted, I am not a subscriber, so I dont (cant!) complain about any privacy rights or anything, but I would think a paying subscriber should, at the very least, have privacy in thier PM's.

Okay people, this isn't worth freaking out over! The member who posted that thread was banned. It would be a simple matter for the mods to look through his recent PM history to see who had PM'd him for the coupon code. Do the Mods go through every PM sent? Of course not. Do they go through PMs at all, when they have no reason to suspect wrongdoing? I would certainly hope not, and maybe I'm just being naive but I seriously don't think they have the time to do such a thing even if they wanted to. I would imagine that they only look at PMs when it's warranted.
 
I doubt they will read every single PM of every user out there. If someone advertises in a thread with illegal stuff, they may check his/her mailbox to see if he/she is indeed dealing in that stuff. And besides that they may run scans on all mailboxes for forbidden stuff, and read the mails that contain it. And for the rest they'll only read the mails of the interesting people, so I'm quite safe.
 
Once I read this thread, it occurred to me that the mods are probably petty enough to go and read all the PMs of somebody if they get irritated with a user but don't have a valid reason to take action against them, just to dig up dirt to use. Or just to be petty and flex their muscles because they can. But my feelings about the moderators are well known, I think.

Of course, it is greatly amusing that anybody would conduct business using a privately owned server's messaging system with no privacy policy regarding the messages, or send private information through that system and fully expect that there's no chance of it being intercepted. People are afraid to use online purchasing for fear of credit card theft, but they'll send all sorts of other information in the name of convenience and fun.

Guess what... Your ISP can read your e-mail too... Your ISP can also intercept your IM as well.

You want privacy? Use encryption...

Private messages is just a post to another person that he or she can only see intead of the entire forum.. i wouldnt discuss anything not allowed on this bbs in a private message, thats for email.

The whole issue with posting coupons is that some of them were meant to be used by those on the companies email list instead of it being posted publicly, its not good for anandtech's reputation as a whole. How would you feel if you were the person in charge of issuing a $30 off coupon for store xyz, which was emailed to 75 select people and 500 ended up using it. :disgust:

Almost every "hot deal" involves coupons of some type and there really not hard to find if you look so there really isnt a point in asking where to find it. 😉

Guys obviously this place isn't a democracy.... it's run how Anand and his cronies think it should be run. You pay a subscription fee to support them and to buy Anand another BMW. If you enjoy it, why not? After all, people also join cults... it was enjoyable at the time. Though they weren't allowed to freely think, they were however free to worship the cult leader. By "free to worship" I mean, your ass was kicked out if you didn't think the way you were supposed to think!

If you can't tell, I could really care less if the Mods read my PMs. They'd just find out about my sleeping with their momma's sooner than later.... 🙂
