Are most of you work normal 40 hours a week here?

I'm disabled. I've worked as a delivery driver a good share of my work life. I had two companies fold right out from under me and another (DHL) who decided it was better to use the people who set the standard for the worst service in the industry (Airborne Express) and got rid of all the people (us) who built the company. At 47 years old I had to work my way back to where I was making the same money and actually had my dream job - I had 20 routes all over central NY and northern PA and I could do them in any order so long as they were serviced within a 45 day window. As a delivery driver it gets no better than that because I could avoid a lot of the snow and bed weather by just doing a different route. Made more working there than 16 years at DHL then I crushed a few discs in my back and now I'm essentially house-bound. Sitting at home playing World of Warcraft all day might sound like fun to some of you but it's not for me. I went from racing the clock everyday to standing completely still and it really blows. While most of you are bitching about your jobs I'd do anything to get back to mine.

The grass is always greener...

I work 40 hour work weeks, or more specificly 160 hour 4-week periods. It's shift work so some times I'll work 12 hour days, other times 8 hour days. The nice thing is all the time off.

I really don't know how people work 12+ hours a day, all week, how do you have any time for yourself? When I'm on 12's it's 4 days in a row but I can't imagine doing that 5 or 6 days a week every week.

I love the shift work though, overall I have way more time for myself.

when i worked oil & gas, my usual schedule was 2weeks @ 12 hrs shifts, then 2 weeks off. I have worked some 3 week rotations @ 12 hr days with 1 week off. in the end i worked about 180-200 days a year at a job site. While at the job site, though, there were occossions where I worked 14 hr days, a few 18 hr days and rare 20-24 hr day.

Now i switched jobs and work 40 hrs a week since I'm OT eligible. They make sure to keep me at 40 hrs

07:15 - 15:45 mon-fri, with a 30 minute lunch break included.. plus a 3 hour commute each day, not included.. So in practice I'm away from home 12 hours each day or 60 hours a week, every week of the year.

7:30-4 now and I love it.

used to do a 4x4 graveyard, 4 days on, 4 days off.. that was awesome except the graveyard portion in the summertime, was impossible for me to sleep when I wanted to be outside.

Worst job I had was a 12 hour shift 5am to 5pm, in the winter I saw no daylight.
