Otherwise, you shouldnt post idiotic comments like this.

Benchmarks are not BS, that's still the most ridiculous statement you've said so far.

My machine has no neon lights. The case sits on the ground where I can't see it, why should I care what it looks like? All I care about is performance. All you care about is being a fanboi. Seriously, calling benchmarks BS then spouting that Macs are better... that's fanboi for ya. Read what you post, maybe you'll realize why 94% of the market still uses PC's.

The last time I checked, the A64 was the fastest platform available for Photoshop. RAM is very expensive for the Mac, and is the #1 factor in Photoshop performance.

RAM is RAM. Buying it from Apple costs more than it should, but you can stick any manufacturers DDR RAM in them. Just make sure its the right speed.

And Final Cut Pro is reasonably priced ($999) for what it does, but there is also Final Cut Express at $299 and iMovie, which is free. If you need something more than FCE or iMovie, you won't be complaining about $1K for FCP HD.

The PC you have is already good enough. I personally would rather work on an old G4 800DP system and use Apple's software than a fast PC with Adobe's, but for the most part it really doesn't matter until you get into the pro space. Definitely wouldn't scrap your PC. I would suggest on use your peer's system and try to do a project. See if switching platforms is worth it to you. Don't ask a bunch of PC guys why their PC is better! 😛

It's not that bad (but almost), they're up to the gffx now in terms on nvidia, and the 9200 up to the 9700 in terms of ati.

Actually for the newer PM's you can get the 6800U DDL and 6800GT, of which the 6800U DDL is not available on the PC yet. For some reason the ATI cards are lagging...

Final Cut Pro HD **cannot** use HDV out of the box. For that you would need an add-on piece of software not made by Apple. That software is called Luminere HD and will cost you an additional $179. With that software you'll be able to use JVC and Sony's prosumer HD camcorders, although it still won't be truely native. (http://www.lumierehd.com/lumiere_hd.php

Out of the box, Final Cut Pro HD *can* use DVCProHD natively. One such camcorder is the Panasonic Vericam (http://www.zacuto.com/panasonic27v.htm or the Panasonic DVCProHD deck (http://www.panasonic.ca/Englis...cast/hd/aj_hd1700.asp.

Also, Final Cut Pro HD *can* work with raw uncompressed HD video, such as that from a HDCAM camcorder or deck. This is what the pros typically use, and have been using for the past 3 years. This is what what Lucasfilm used to shoot Episode 2. But to work with this, you would need to have a fast RAID (such as the Xserve RAID) and an PCI card with HD inputs. Uncompressed HD can use from about 100 MB/sec to 200 MB/sec!! Some hardware examples are:

http://www.media100.com/Media100HD.asp
or
http://www.aja.com/products_kona.html
or
http://www.auroravideosys.com/...cts/pipeFam_pipehd.php

Or here is a bundle ready to go:
http://www.gearbox.com/product...ideo/applefcphire.html

Edited to fix broken links.
Edited AGAIN to fix broken links. (Blah! I'm ready for an EQ2 break!)

I'm not a video editor but:

1) What about colour matching? Dunno about video, but my Photoshop geek friends say it's MUCH easier to colour match on the Mac.

2) Dual 2.5 GHz G5 plus dual 30" LCD screens is teh sexay. 😛

3) Dual rules in general, regardless if you're on Macs or Win PCs.

4) Apple Motion

5) Xserve RAID

But yeah, if you're not a Pro, I don't see the point of buying a new computer if you already have a reasonable 3400+.

Ridiculous? Benchmarks are not BS?? Are you saying Apples benchmarks are not BS?? Are you saying all those PC websites benchmarks are not BS?? So if you saw a benchmark showing a 2.4GHz Celeron whooping a 3GHz P4, that is not BS?? Benchmarks are BS period. I dont understand how you wouldnt know. Have you noticed every single website that shows benchmarks show something different while using the same computers for testing? If my statement is ridiculous, prove it. Otherwise, dont post.

Why should I care what my computer looks like? I dont care what my computer looks like either. I care about performance, and I get plenty out of my 1GHz Mac. So why did you bring up looks in the first place? I dont "spout" that Macs are better. Perhaps you should quote me on this. Otherwise, stop making stuff up.

You cant compare Apple to the entire PC industry. Compare Apple to Dell, HP, Alienware, etc.

There are lies, damned lies, and benchmarks.

Seriously, benchmarks help keep the industry competitive. They help the buyer get a rough idea of performance of specific operations in specific areas, and perhaps more importantly, they let companies get an idea of how well their competition is doing. I use benchmarks all the time when I'm researching products. It's good to know in advance if a certain product is, for example, 40% slower than the next competitior! I don't base my buying decisions solely on benchmarks, especially when buying something where raw performance differences won't be obvious to the end user.

It's interesting to note that of the highly skilled video production pros I have talked with, almost all were oblivious to the latest benchmarks. Their in-house tech guys usually keep up with those details to help make buying decisions, but when it comes down to it, the biggest performance question that's asked prior to buying is this: "is the machine more than fast enough?". Usability, familiarity, and reliability seem to always be far more important issues. The same for tech support... they desire as few contacts as possible. 10 years ago they favored all-in-one Avid Newscutter systems, today they prefer almost-all-Apple solutions. Some of the cinema pros still use the far more expensive "turn-key" Fire, Flame, and Inferno bundle systems from Discreet.

It seems to me that we hobbists are far more concerned with raw performance numbers and benchmarks then the pros are. But then, we don't have huge amounts of money to toss around. Some of those Sony HDCAM camcorders cost almost as much as my house. I ran across one HDCAM tape deck that was 50% *more* expensive than my house! I thought I was spending money like a drunken sailor when I spent $2200 on my PowerBook and $1600 on my latest PC!!!

Thinlizzy has this thing with macs, thinking they are the sickest thing since PB&J. Admit it, you know your mac sux, you spent way too much money for it and in the process of purchasing it you were brainwashed by mac fanatics. Now after realizing your purchase was a waste, you try to justify it by any means possible and in order to do that, you decide to go on these crusades, brainwashing all those you encounter (or at least attempt to) while upping your ego thinking that, "Hey, spending 3K on my mac wasn't such a bad idea".... Thin Lizzy, you live in a fantasy world, a world where you think your purchases are the smartest and the best. You may "claim" that is not so because you want to make your self look better than some other mac fanatics but you truely know that deep down inside you wonder if others think of you as a troll and you know what, people do (at least I do). You very well know you can't do sh!t with your crappy computer, you also know that even a 8086 can do more than your hunk of crap.

So please, stop while your ahead otherwise you'll soon become a lifer which may not be bad for you but it will surely make those who actually have made a worth while contribution to the anandtech community, look like fools.

An 8086 will not even run a GUI OS besides maybe Windows 1.0 but evev that I am sure needed a 80286 to run. My god. You are the reverse of Thin Lizzy.

I like and use both Macs and PC's. If I had to give up one of the other ......

You figure out which one I would choose. But to help you along, it's the OS that would make me choose, not the hardware.

Oh and Thin Lizzy, I have nothing against you at all, just had to comment to him after that 8086 comment. That is not even sane. I have a Decked out IBM 5151 made in Boca Rattan Flordia so I know what I am talking about. Slowest machine I have ever used. My Atari 130XE feels faster!!

thin lizzy has an emac. They're cheap. You're looking at most $900 for one. You are so damn stupid Philippine Mango sprouting forth with comments like that. From what I can tell from the various posts you've made on AT, you hate Windows XP, and you hate mac (coz you know nothing about them). Oh, and an 8086 couldn't even run Windows 1.0. How would I know? coz I've tried it! (for that matter, I have run Windows 1.03 on an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ just last year. That was hell funny)
I'm not a fanboy, but since switching to mac (I bought an iBook G4, which is also cheap, $999 for it), I much prefer using OS X over Windows (both of which I use a lot - I still have PC's you know, and still use them at University and at friends' places). It's the OS that converted me more than anything.

Yes, I do have my thing with Macs. So what? You have your thing with PC's. I dont have a problem with it. Are you sure I know my Mac sucks? How do you know? Did I tell you? Can you prove that I was brainwashed by Mac fanatics? Can I assume you were brainwashed by PC fanatics? How do I make myself look better? Because I say benchmarks are BS? Can you please explain that to me? Can you prove that I live in a fantasy world? You can think of me as a troll if you like. It doesnt bother me.

Can you prove that I cant do sh!t with my computer? Did I tell you I cant? Can you pove that an 8086 can do better than my Mac?

Its funny how most these people use immature comments like this as some type of argument. Until you can provide valid answers to the questions I have asked you, feel free to post again. Otherwise, you have no business here. Grow up a little will ya?

hahahahhahaha...a zealot criticizing a fanatic for being overzealous!

And you know what else I have noticed? Many of the die hard PC uses say us Mac users are brainwashed because we are defending our platform. Saying us Mac users are some kind of Cult. Well, you Die hard PC users are the exact same way. Philippine Mango, Malak and kwshaw are perfect examples. So really, what do you guys have against Mac users?

Wow! Get the hose!!

In my house, my Mac and all of my PCs coexist nicely.

Now why can't Mac users and PC users coexist nicely?

Good question. Probably because some of the die hard PC users here attack Mac users with immature comments, and say Mac users are a Cult and we are brainwashed although the die hard PC users are the same, but they just cant see that.

lol, same, and I couldn't agree more (I don't like fighting, but when I see lies being spread, I have to say something 😛)

I think the problem stems with the fact that PC's have a larger market share, more people are introduced to them first, and are told that Macs are terrible all because of the past, not the present.

I know die hard Mac users that act the same way.

*Sigh*

Play together nicely or no Internet access for a week!

Your right the 8086 comment was an extreme exaggeration but I can tell you that your mac isn't much better than an 8086. I've used both and I can say that macs do suck, I truely think that you have been brainwashed.

And I know a Die hard PC user who acts the same. Though I am not a Die hard Mac user, I dont like it when people spread stupid BS around about Macs. People use stupid reasons to dislike Macs, although they dont even use one.

I think you were brainwashed too. You cant compare todays Macs with that computer. So you are still exaggerating. People try so hard to make the Mac look bad....

When did you use the mac, what type was it, what specs did it have, and what version of the OS was it running? I think you're just full of *@!#
