Are honorary societies worth it?

Not Phi Beta Kappa, but something like the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor society for Economics undergraduates; $30 lifetime dues, etc etc. I don't really care and it's nothing more than a resume line, but if it looks better, it might be worth it.

If it helps get you a job it is. After that it's worthless.

if there's any real honor in those, it's in the invitation.. there must be a way to word that so you can put it on your resume without payin' all those 30 buckses..

I think its a "why not" kind of thing here. If for 30 dollars you can have something else to pad your resume with and also it might come in handy later, like if an interviewer was also of the same society.

Resume padding and you'll probably take it out after a few years but if it gives you the edge in getting the first job, why not?

I actually forgot to reply for the pre-med honorary society. Slight oops but oh well.

I think maybe the rule of thumb might ought to be.. are there meetings you can go to? if yes, then maybe it's worth it.

so many of these things are a racket... the one that came today.. national deans list. well.. hell.. all that means is.. you have decent GPA at a university that sells their deans list to this place that makes you pay to be on their list. wow.. what a value. I expect most corporations of any size or savvy would look at "national deans list" on a resume and stamp it "SUCKER"..

but.. if there's an actual local organization with meetings you could go to if you chose to.. then maybe it's worth the 30 bucks.

Not in tech fields, but perhaps people hiring Econ grads are more easily impressed.

What (besides $30) are the requirements to join? I was press-ganged into an honor society as an undergrad based entirely on my GPA.

eh. define "worth it". it's probably not going to help you get a job.

I was part of (and chapter president of) the English honors society (Sigma Tau Delta... STD. we were able to make some great posters out of that ). It hasn't helped me at all career-wise, but it was a fun thing to do in college, it helped me get some stuff published on a national level, and it gave me a cadre of lackies to order around

Plus, the graduation ceremony is really all about wearing more cords and medals than the person standing next to you

Phi Beta Kappa is a national honor society, I forget the exact prereqs but a good friend of mine was invited, he has a 3.8 GPA and is graduating with college honors. I think the exact requirements are a preset GPA (3.7+?) and a curriculum with significant coursework in a variety of areas. It's quite a prestigious honor. I was surprised to find that out myself.

Actually you do not have to pay anything to be on the national deans list. Purchase of the book, is not required. Its basically a free shot at a $1,000 scholarship. They also offer free services. Now would someone add that, or any honor societies to a resume? I personally would not.

Honor Societies, and participation in them, look quite well on your academic record, if you pursue, graduate or professional degrees.
