bread mapped cubically to main ingredient yields 6 results.
1 side = open face sandwich or pizza or tostada
2 sides(opposing) = sandwich
3 sides(side+bottom+side) = taco or hot dog
4 sides(top+bottom+2 opposing sides ie cylinder) = cannoli or taquito/flauta
5 sides(bottom+4sides) = tart or open top pie or shumai dimsum
6 sides(full enclosure) = burrito or pasty or ravioli

upon taking a bite out of a burrito it then becomes 5 sided and therefore a shumai.
if you break the hotdog bun along the hinge while eating, it goes from taco to sandwich.
a pie is 5 sided, but if you take out a slice it becomes 3 sided and therefore a taco.

Technically they are, but to my ears it always sounds weird to hear them referred to as such. To me a Sandwich is a very general term applied to a Sliced Bread concoction with a wide variety of ingredients in the middle. A Hamburger uses a specific type of Bread Bun, always contains some type of Meat or Meat Substitute Patty, and various other ingredients.

I think the main reason it sounds weird to me is that it is redundant. Kinda like saying "Trouser Pants" or "Tuna Fish", Trousers are Pants and Tuna is Fish. There's no need to say more.

A toastada, burrito or taco is not any less meat beans cheese and tortilla because of its name.

It would only be logical to assume that if you call a hamburger a sandwich, you're just a mexican.

Is a taco burger a sandwich? How about a patty melt? Full disclosure, I make both VERY well on summer holidays (holiday not to be confused with vacation in the normal world).

I suppose it could be considered a sandwich kinda like a pizza could be considered a pie. Sorta unconventional, but if you really consider it, it could count as one.

It depends entirely on who makes it. If you make it yourself, it's a hamburger. If someone makes it for you, it's a sandwich.

This is a sandwich of a "burger" (hamburger steak)
hamburger-sandwich.jpg

One of those "things chefs know but don't tell anyone"...

Where hamburger is concerned, unless the restaurant grinds it themselves, never order hamburger anywhere below medium.

Unless I grind it myself, I don't trust any hamburger below medium. I don't care how fancy the restaurant is or who works there. I only trust myself.

My burger style of choice is homemade smashburger. If I want thick rare burger, I'll eat a steak.
