It depends partially on the mattress, but I believe the real culprit is the frame. If the futon in question has round metal bars, it doesn't matter if they have 3" or 6" spaces, every bar makes a pressure point, and are incredibly uncomfortable. If you are buying a decent wood framed futon, with slats, that have about a 1" to 4" spacing between the slats, and it folds out into a nice flat surface without a ridge down the middle of the two pieces, then it can be quite comfortable. You can even take another person's suggestion and use a memory foam mattress topper to add extra comfort.

I would honestly buy a well designed wooden framed futon, but never a metal one.

That's an excellent point. A quality wood frame does make a difference.

A quality (comfortable) futon is not going to save you any money over getting a good mattress, however it will save space.

That looks like a futon I had like 8 years ago. If you are going to be buying that futon offline though, I would call the company, and express your interest in it, and ask if they can provide you with photos of the frame without the mattress, in both "couch" and "bed" positions, so you can make sure. Some wooden framed futons have widely spaced slats.

I would guess though, that the one you linked is well made, by the look of that premium mattress.

That looks like a good one. What you need to remember is that the fold in the middle of the mattress will damage the stuffing, and seriously limit the lifetime of the mattress. You'll never feel the frame underneath with the right mattress. I have a high-quality mattress, and it lasts about two years, and that's not sleeping on it every night. If you're not prepared to spend a couple of hundred dollars for a new high-quality mattress every year, don't even bother.

They'll do the job for a few nights, but I wouldn't hold them to comfortably support my back in medium-long term.

Holy necro, Batman.

I've had the same futon mattress since I posted in this thread five years ago. Slept on it for a couple of nights last month. It's every bit as comfy as my bed mattress, even after eight years on the futon frame in the upright position.

It was worth every penny I paid for it. :)

But I wouldn't spend a single penny on the ones listed in the post above. Those look seriously uncomfortable.

hands down the best afternoon naps i ever took were on my futon. i mean the deep sleep where you dead and when you wake up you dont know where you are. yea i miss it, but my fat ass sister in law came over one day and cracked it when she sat on it.
