Are futons even remotely comfortable to sleep on?

I have one and I've managed with it for the past several years. Don't get me wrong, I'd take a bed any night over a futon, but for what it's worth, it's worth it's better than no bed at all. :)

Some of them are ok. It all depends on the mattress quality. If you spend some good money on a good thick mattress they can be real comfy!

Yes, mattress quality makes a huge difference. Our futon mattress has an inner spring that has held up pretty well. It's not bad at all for sleeping.

Speaking of sleeping bag, I need to get a 36" wide sleeping bag 'cause my 32" is way too small.

They're ok, but I've also spent a summer sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag. After two years the 10" stuffed (as opposed to 6" or 8" stuffed or an innerspring futon matteress) has a definite sag in the middle that bugs me on some nights. I flip the thing every month to try to get rid of it, and I think that if I weren't so bad with money I would just buy a real bed.

sure - just make sure you don't skimp on the mattress. I've slept on one for several years now.

Queen or full, depending on the mattress.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't want to sleep on a futon every night, but for a guest room, a futon with a decent mattress is more than adequate.

Well, my situation is such. I am switching rooms with my kids and taking the smaller one and giving them the master bedroom. The smaller room fits my queen bed but really limits space, so I was considering a futon. A pullout sofa isnt what I want, I have slept on those and thats horrible:(

I'll look into that. I don't need anything heavy duty, just something that will let me stretch all out.

I slept on them through 2 years of HS, a year of college, and whenever I come home to visit my parents over the last 2 years.

It's all about the mattress. My parents had gotten me one for my birthday thats was on clearance for $300. Normally it ran for something like $700, and it was really comfortable.

IMHO

It depends partially on the mattress, but I believe the real culprit is the frame. If the futon in question has round metal bars, it doesn't matter if they have 3" or 6" spaces, every bar makes a pressure point, and are incredibly uncomfortable. If you are buying a decent wood framed futon, with slats, that have about a 1" to 4" spacing between the slats, and it folds out into a nice flat surface without a ridge down the middle of the two pieces, then it can be quite comfortable. You can even take another person's suggestion and use a memory foam mattress topper to add extra comfort.

I would honestly buy a well designed wooden framed futon, but never a metal one.

I got a futon with a mattress that had springs and I slept on it for 2 years without any issues...honestly that mattress is more comfy than this mattress I'm sleeping on now.

Yeah, I have already had my eye on this one...
