I'd run from benQ drives as I would from fire.
getting a benQ drive was the biggest mistake I've ever made, I don't want to get into faul language and all to express my feelings towards benQ, so all I'm gonna say is, stay away from it. If you want good drives, get LG, by far the best I've used (and I did use quite a few brands).

LG is a slow reader, so it can't be best.

If anything, i'd get BenQ 1640 atm - technically probably the most advanced drive there is today. BenQ might have had problems with QC in their lines, but I haven't heard a lot of problems with 1640 (well, at least not more than with NECs).

I own a DW1640... bought it 2 weeks ago... runs perfectly. I upgraded the firmware and it burns dual layers without failure.

I saw the newegg review about it not running xp install and call B.S. No problems at all installing xp on my new HD.

liteon requires high quality media to burn successfully, with cheap generic media it fails 90 percent of the times. just horrible!

NEC uses its own chipset for its burners the chipset used by the nec 3540 is NEC D6364. The Benq 1640 use chipset Philips' Nexperia PNX7860E (as does the plex 740 since it is just a rebadged benq, firmware between the two drives is even interchangeable).
