I am thinking about getting a DVD-RW drive soon. Same thing happen when I was about to get a IBM 75 gxp hard drive. Thankfully I found out in time before getting one. Not comparing the two though.

Just as reliable as any I'd imagine. I've never heard any more complaints against BenQ than any other brand.

I use NEC myself though, so I'm not the best person to ask.

I am starting to see more evidence that BenQ DVD-RW drives could be unreliable. I don't want them to be though.

Exactly how & where are you seeing this evidence?

The BenQ DW1620 Pro was regarded as one of the best DVD burners out in its time, & now the DW1640 is also receiving high praise.

Tell me just how you came to this conclusion that they are unreliable

The exact same way I came to the conclusion that the IBM 75 gxp hard drives were unreliable as most everyone else did.

Okay...look around here.

Then start pointing out threads that claim unreliability. If you find any ;)

I've noticed more threads with NEC drive issues than any other brand, but this forum is also filled with NEC fanbois, so it makes sense that the more drives bought, the more issues seen.

It seems like you mostly have your mind made up John. :p

Seriously though, I don't think there's much difference between any DVD writer at this point, so I suggest you not get BenQ, simply because it seems you'll be at ease with that. :p As far as DVD writers go, there's not enough differences, so go with what you feel is right.

The most suggested drives are BenQ and NEC though, just so you know. I'm using an NEC ND-3520A myself. The only issue I can really think of with my drive is slow ripping speeds, but a hacked firmware rectifies that.

3 links to 1 page threads, one of which is the 1620. if "so many" were failing you'd think there'd be an uproar, no?

There are more forums that say BenQ DVD-RW drives are unreliable. Thats my point as well.

I have a Benq 1620 and would buy another in a heart beat. I bought it because of the rave reviews I read here and on several other sites, and have not been dissapointed.

are you looking to buy one or just do an exploration of the problem?

if you're looking to buy one i wouldn't waste my time. if you have any doubts, just get a different brand.
