Best type? Jasmine? Basmati?

Best Brand? Tilda? Elephant? Golden Pheonix?

Cost is not really a concern since one can buy pounds of rice for just a few dollars.

Whenever I buy rice (fairly often), I usually buy Jasmine. 🙂 I don't like Basmati.

i buy this japanese brand rice in the korean market in ktown of LA, but i totally forgot the name. it's pricey rice - 15 bucks for 20 lbs compared to the 5 bucks for 20lbs of calrose. it's good though.

New Crop Jasmine. I got one bag with green and red on the outside, 3 ladies on it. I have another bag, green and red lettering, huge butterfly. Both taste the same to me. Both have some cheap #1 plastic medal on the top of the bag.

Some good comments here but just to bring it all together.

It really depends on how you are going to cook it/how sticky you want it. 'Chinese'/Thai rice is usually more sticky - useful if you are using chopsticks. Other ethnic races have other preferences, eg. Indian basmati is different because each cooked grain is distinct and separate.

Thai jasmine rice, it is considered the 'best' for taste/texture/smell. Basmati is its indian equivalent.

My mother uses Jasmine but I like Calrose (whatever type that is)....on occasion, if I find a good, brown Basmati, I'll take that

since we're talking rice ... anyone know how to make this ..

I have a friend who's dad is Iranian. When I'd go over their place, he'd usually make this basmati rice .. a big mound of it .. but it was like fried or something because the outside layer was crispy. it was good. crispy rice dome .. yummy. 🙂

Yeah, I've read about that, it's difficult to get right.. IIRC you boil the rice and then just let it keep cooking till all the water boils out.. the outside of the pot is crispy and the inside is still soft... You have to add butter at some point...
