Are any Celeron 1037U Motherboards actually available?

They ran hot, so I broke them out into a JBOD enclosure and do not have any drives actually installed in the case.

With just the Celeron and the PSU in there, temps are fine.

In retrospect, the case was kind of a bust.

I wonder if I could get away with three 3.5" HDDs in APEX MI-008 if:

1. I use unRAID so only one disk spins up during read and two disks speed up during write (as compared to RAID-Z or RAID5 where all three disk spin up during reads and writes)

2. I use 5xxx rpm "green drives" as compared to 7200 rpm drives.

3. I put a 80mm fan mounted on the side vents of the case where the PCI-E slot is.

I don't really think there's enough room for that dual-drive thing you've got there. Unless you've got some very slim 3.5" drives. A 5.25" bay is 1.625" high, and height of 3.5" HDDs varies, but they're typically an inch tall, and need space in between for airflow.

Thanks for pointing that out.

So my three 3.5" HDDs would be positioned as follows:

One drive in the 3.5" bay, one drive in the 5.25" bay and one drive in the sled mounted on the side of the case opposite the PCI-E slot.

600 posts!! :D :D :D where are those 2955U deals :p

on a side note, i was playing a couple free games from the Windows 8 app store (Asphalt 8, Minion Rush), and I was honestly surprised at how smooth the gameplay was (I believe Minion Rush was even performing @ 60fps)

running solely off of a 1037U + the 1037U's graphics XD

I wonder if we will ever see a 2955U or 2980U consumer board?

Instead maybe Intel could do something cool for us and release Haswell Celerons with unlocked multipliers, ike the 20th anniversary Pentium?

Since the I/O is so limited on the BGA Haswell celerons (only PCI-E 2.0 x4, two SATA) there is little chance these would compete with Z87 and Z97, etc

it's been a whole month!!! lol!

anyways, seems like a lot of manufacturers didn't go for haswell and started releasing quite a bit of baytrail boards (good or bad, depending on how you look at it)

a quad core Celeron J1900 BayTrail runs for about $70-ish on newegg:

The ECS 1037U boards have dried up. I haven't seen one on sale at Newegg for about a month.

A good question is what will come next for BGA "Core Series" CPUs?

What's next as the successor to the Celeron 1037U and J1900? Would it be the Braswell chips expected in the latter half of this year?

It's been a while since I have 1037u, also bought a NUC with i3 3217u last summer, From my experience I would say NUC is so much better but at significantly higher cost, it's very easy to play with and the small footprint is nicer to put on the back of TV with VESA mount built in. My 1037u is still running by the wireless router/cable modem but only for downloading only now. Probaly will keep it running forever, but NUC is such a nice upgrade over 1037u especially paired with a 2.5 HDD for everyday usage, looking forward I will get another one of the new generation i5 NUC when intel release them in February.

Braswell would be the successor to Bay Trail-D (eg, j1900 etc).

Not sure what we will see in place of 1037U, but since almost all of the broadwell chips (with the exception of the K series) will be BGA I wouldn't be surprised if we saw something from that line-up on Mini-ITX eventually.

P.S. Kinda tough to replace 1037U because of the four SATA ports, but I am sure we would see something eventually.

I need to put together that server that I've been putting off for so long. Will be getting one of either:

Biostar NM70I-1037U

or

ECS NM70-I2 (V1.0)

Very similar features and price. I don't have any experience with either brand, but I've seen both trashed in reviews as being cheap. Will try to run Win2k8 R2, but I could also run Linux.

Recommendation?

I have the Celeron 847 version of the ECS board (1.1GHz instead of 1.8.) It's fine, it's been reliable. It's not like I'm OCing or something.

Thanks. Just ordered one.

Do you know if that board has the ability to run DDR3 1600 at 1600 MHz? The 1037U/NM70 supposedly supports it, but the ECS site shows any RAM >1333 running at 1333.

Not from personal experience - it said it supported 1333, I bought 1333 for it, and it runs at 1333.

If you have 1600 around already, no reason it shouldn't work at the lower speed.

I have a small file server (it's offline most of the time) that I built with the ECS NM70-I2. It works pretty good with windows 2k8R2. Just remember to check the heatsink/fan. You may need to remove the spacers assuming they never fixed the problem.

What kind of CPU temps are you seeing? I haven't set it up yet, as I'm waiting on drives, but I did boot into the BIOS. I think it was reporting temps between 30 and 40C while in the BIOS. I noticed that it was also reporting the CPU fan spinning at something like 2900RPM, but it didn't seem to be going anywhere near that fast.

When I first got the mobo, there must have been an error in engineering or QC, as the spacers they used for the HS/fan kept it from properly contacting the CPU. I was getting temps of 105C at boot and constant crashes and stuff. After I corrected the problem myself, I'm seeing far more normal temps of 30-37C (I have a small aftermarket HS)

One development I have noticed is that Broadwell ULV Celeron has Quick Sync enabled:

http://ark.intel.com/products/84811/Intel-Celeron-Processor-3755U-2M-Cache-1_70-GHz

Quick sync was absent on the 2955U and 2980U Haswell ULV Celerons. (It is present on Bay Trail-D though)

Strangely enough, it is available on the Celeron 2957U which seems to be replacing the 2955U in recent product releases.
