Selling more units does not equate to being a better product.
So if Microsoft makes a XBOX 720 with a hybrid BD/HD-DVD player, HDMI, 2 CPUs, 2 GPUs...prices it at $999...would that make it a better gaming product than the PS3?

Is that the path we're asking console makers to head down? More power, more features, ad infinitum, who cares about price.

Selling more units does mean it's a more popular product though. 😉
TallBill is simply redefining success to the product that caters best to 18-25 year old 'hardcore gaming' males. Anyone outside that demographic shouldn't be allowed to buy a console.

The xbox 720 probably will a better gaming product then the PS3, but it wont be out for a few years. And yes, more power = better. $600 is not a lot.

You are putting sales numbers as the definition of success. I just want good products and good games, which the wii wont provide. I probably wont buy a PS3 either untill it has a quality game library at least. And I'm hesitant to get a new 360 because my original broke in 30 days.

I laugh when you keep talking about 18-25 "hardcore gamers". The best gamers probably know what the best games are.

Well apparently those gamers want a Wii despite a 'shaky' game library at the moment. And generally in business when you redefine a concept AND have a demand that constantly outstrips supply(still have to camp out at 6am to get one) and sell 7.1+ million units in the 6 months after a launch...thats generally a definition of success, especially in the video game/entertainment industry.

I can understand your idea and thought that more power is better but it's obviously not working for Sony at the moment. And 600 dollars is ALOT to many people, myself included. 600 dollars is a small house or condo payment, or rent for a month or car payment plus car insurance...

To you it's not alot but to many people it is. Perhaps if you could stop having such a selfish viewpoint of this you may or may not understand that. I know you are stubborn but jeez man look at the big picture here, despite it's graphical inferiority it's kicking Sony and Microsoft in the ass as far as sales are concerned and we can have our separate opinions but to say the Wii isn't a success is somewhat ignoring the fact at the moment.

600 dollars for a gaming system is lot for me. It wasn't when I was a hardcore gamer but I'm a casual gamer now. Money is less of an issue than the principle behind it.

$600 is too alot for a gaming system. The number one complaint since the PS3 has been released (actually since E3 last year) has been the price. Even $400 for the 360 is pushing the limits of acceptability.

Price is definitely important. The PS3 and 360 are both catering to young male gamers. The 360 is cheaper (and has more games), so the sales are no surprise. With price drops, the 360 will tighten the noose on the PS3.

Hats off to Nintendo for hyping their product so well. I couldn't imagine buying such an underpowered system, but I suppose it is great for kids and the older (middle aged and beyond) crowd.

I agree with you on the noose tightening. They need to get the 65nm cpu out though too, and hopefully gpu as well. A $300 premium and $400 elite with 65nm cpu/gpu would splatter the PS3 as well as get some converts from the "cheap" wii crowd.

But saying that $600 is a lot is crazy. Pick almost any hobby, and you can blow $600 very quickly. The main reason that I dont have a PS3 is just lack of library.

Out of curiosity, what do people think about the PS3 version of Stranglehold? The collector's edition is only possible on a next-gen media format.

(it comes with the HD version of Hard Boiled on the same disc as the game)

Hopefully other games will offer similar perks.

Let me guess...you're a single male, with no dependents. $600 is a lot of money to the average household in America. Throw in an extra controller and a few $60 games, and you're up to $900.

That's way too expensive for many people. I know I'm not going to buy one unless the price drops $300. I'd rather buy a $120 PS2, get a bunch of $20 games, and be perfectly happy. Just like the other 3 million people who bought a PS2 in the last few months.

We get it. You don't like the Wii. But just because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad product.

Just because you're a friendless loner doesn't mean all gamers are.

And I never said that the wii wasn't selling better. Its just a crappy video game system. Its a gamecube with a new controller, and the gamecube was a flop in itself.
The new controller is the system. What exactly does the PS3 or 360 offer that previous systems didn't? Better graphics? Talk about a gimmick.

Pretty much, he seems like an arrogant jerk that believes the world should revolve around him.

I'll pretend to be TallBill for a moment:

The community. That was practically stated as Sony's mission statement at GDC.

It may have gotten started on the previous consoles, but they can't compare to what is available now and what will be available in the fall (Home). Even the Wii is showing no signs of developing a community like the ones the 360 and PS3 have to offer.

Oh right, those teenagers screaming obscenities. I don't think I'm missing anything.

LoL. we'll all laugh at this in three years when the PS3 starts to shine. This is the same deal with PS2 vs. Dreamcast.

We must have completely different memories of PS2 vs. DC. 😛

You know, I bought a Wii last week, and it's already had more play time than my 360 that I bought in December. I got some Mario 64 going... it's nice. I'll have to get Ocarina of Time next.

I'm going to wait until my b-day at the end of July and get a PS3. Hoping for a price drop by then, doubt it though. The 1.8 firmware makes it the perfect multimedia device to go with my new set. I don't care so much about games but having the entire PS2 library available in 1080p is a good thing while I wait for the killer apps for the PS3.

I won't get a 360 until the hardware defects are completely gone. How Microsoft is getting away with selling such shoddy hardware is beyond me. I love the concept of the Wii but I know I'll get bored of it pretty quick. My DS gives me all the Nintendo fix I need.

Oh, if I do get a PS3 it's a sure sign Sony will lose the console wars. I've jinxed every system going back to the Genesis 🙂
