April 2007 NPD US Video Game Sales Data

For comparison, the data from March 2007 are in the parentheses.

Nintendo DS: 471,000 (508,000)
Nintendo Wii: 360,000 (259,000)
Sony PlayStation 2: 194,000 (280,000)
Sony PSP: 183,000 (180,000)
Microsoft Xbox 360: 174,000 (199,000)
Nintendo Game Boy Advance: 84,000 (148,000)
Sony PlayStation 3: 82,000 (130,000)
Nintendo Gamecube: 13,000 (22,000)

Conclusions drawn:

1. Nintendo said they would push more Wiis into the retail channel, and the healthy sales increase shows they delivered.
2. Sales for the DS Lite are holding relatively steady.
3. PS2 sales took a drop, which was expected since GOW2 caused a spike last month.
4. PSP sales are doing very well since the price drop to $169.99.
5. PS3 sales dropped 38% from last month to their lowest level ever, and no blockbuster system-selling titles are on the horizon until this fall.
6. XBOX 360 sales are holding relatively steady; in fact, MS sold more 360s in the US alone than Sony sold PS3s in the US and Japan combined for the month of April.

My guess is that May, June, July and August will be a similar grim picture for the Sony PS3. September onward will see sales increase, not only because of big software releases, but also because of the rumored $100 price cut. Unfortunately, September will also bring the spectacle known as the release of Halo 3. If sales don't increase significantly (and by that, I mean at least 200-300% over current levels) in the fall, it's back to the drawing boards.

Well, there isnt really any reason to get a PS3 except to think of it as "PS2 with blu-ray player"

A friend of mine got it and kind of regrets she did, but it still has its uses, and in the end, its still the same PS3 that will play games such as MGS4 and FFXIII
 
I'm surprised at the Wii. I think the marketing has done well and overall it has the iPod-factor going on.. it is the console everyone wants to own. Before this generation started I figured Nintendo was shooting for third place again, where they seemed to be comfortable. Instead they are smashing the competition and I don't see them letting up.

Maybe the shift to PC-like game consoles is backfiring? Has a line been crossed with the addition of so many features, and the price tags that come along with them?

god how can people still play pokemon it's soo overdone :s

and man i had no idea gba was still going that strong, i though tit's been going down stream for a while now, becoming a dead system

well if you think about it. the Wii is a jazzed up cube...

the wii is doing well simply because of who it appeals to. for instance my gf couldnt care less about a 360 or a ps3. but she like the idea of a DS and or a Wii because her and her girl firends can ham it up infront of the tv and play Wii drinking games. it appeals to people not normal interested in computer games...and theres a hell of alot more of those around that those who are.

its definately got that ipod/bmw factor. you could put those badges on a cat poo at people will still pay money for it.

of course, DBZ, the M3 is actually worth paying money for.....though i think you should upgrade to a E39 M5.

what you gonna get after the M3? another M3? or the 335i?

I bought the Wii for what it is. A great gaming device. I buy nothing for anyone else, just for me.

'Upgrade' isn't the word I would use when talking about the e39 M5. It's a nice car, but not for me. Not any faster than the M3.

new merc CL looks tasty....might be a bit too wafty after the M3 tho, and i doubt the 335i will have the raw visceral edge of the M3 either.

theyre all limited to 155 so none of them are any faster than each other...but the m5 is capable of getting close to 200mph. not that theres anywhere in the UK you can do that.
 
Yes, the wii is dominating because parents by it for their children. I don't even consider it an adult's video game system. Its not even in the same category.

Actually, it's the adults are buying the Wii for themselves to play the "kiddy" games, while those so-called "adult" games like Halo are played by adolescents spamming "OMG U SUCK NOOB LOLOLOL" all over Xbox Live.

None of the next gen systems are worth owning, really. Granted, I have all 3 of them, but that's because there are games for all of them that I know I will want. As it stands though, there isn't a single reason to own any of them (I guess unless you wanted a cheap blu ray player). Although I'm not quite sure what the 360's deal is. Over a year since release and still not one exclusive great game. A few good games, but none that are great.

M cars do just over 155, but it is not advertised heavily...

Unrestricted the M3 is capable of 186mph, and I will never see that speed, so 200mph is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard!

Seeing as how kids aren't the largest video game consumer demographic, your claim can't be entirely true. It obviously as a huge chunk of the adult market, I wouldn't be surprised if we came up with actual numbers and found it leading there as well. It is leading by so much that it only makes logical sense that it is selling the most in every age demographic.

That's not that long in console years. Hell, the PS2 was around for almost 7 years before the PS3.

Adults can only play super serious titles like 100-hour RPGs and first-person shooters, otherwise they aren't adults, right?

You're not technically an adult unless you spend 20-hours per week casting turn-based spells and fragging aliens! :roll:
 
Nintendo found a way to tap into the biggest market of all: those retiring baby-boomers with gobs of cash to spend. Heck, 70-year-olds are enjoying the Wii in retirement homes!

As stated above, who did Sony go after? The 13-18 male gamer crowed, which is already split between XB360 and PCs? Thr crowd that has no money? Pure genius there.
