😕 What is it about Sony that makes you think they would stop making games if they stopped making consoles? That would be stupid.

IIRC, you're talking to a Sony fanboy. Do you expect a rational answer?

When Sony had the market lead with new products they could get away with all their proprietary crap. Personally I am glad to see them taking hits now if it has a chance of them changing some of their dumbarse ways.

I want Sony to fail this round because if they don't it's going to be a signal to the industry as a whole that people are willing to pay whatever inflated price these companies want to foist on us. Sony thinks we should worship at their feet for gracing us with a lose price of $600? Microsoft has the gall to actually bring out a higher priced version of their console? Screw that, it's a damn toy. I'm glad Nintendo is attempting to keep the price of entertainment reasonable. So far, that seems to be working out well for them. Screw MS and Sony this round, I hope they both crash and burn.

You can buy a 360 for $50 more than a Wii 😕.

Now I shall wait for the responses "but nintendo gives you their XBOX Live Arcade-like WiiSports!" "the Nintendo controller is wireless!" "the Nintendo system has wireless!"

Don't disappoint me 😉.

So is the 360...the Wii doesnt even have any good games out for it. Wii Sports is the only thing worth a ******, and it gets boring real fast.

Well, there are lots of interesting XBOX Live Arcade games if you like simpler things. I still love Lumines on my XBOX 360. The only disadvantage between the 360 lumines and the PSP one is that the 360 one doesn't announce the skin when it comes on 😛 (to save on space I'd assume).

I personally mostly play games on my PC.

Personally, I'm not too worried about the sales currently. Actually, for the limited amount of games out, the price, and the fact that it's new, selling around 3.6 million (from what I've gathered) worldwide (Wii at 7 some million, 360 at 9 something million) isn't TOO bad. I'm really tired of all this Sony hating, though. The PS3 is a great system, it's just too young to have a good selection of titles and it still has the high price.

My opinion on each console/how it will do in the future:

360 - I feel this is just the "Halo console." I don't know anyone in my town that owns a 360 other than the fact that it's getting Halo 3. Don't get me wrong, Halo games are fun, but totally overrated. What else does the 360 have? Nothing I've seen on it makes me ever want to buy it. I played GoW, found it OK at best (but pretty). Halo 3 will probably bore me like Halo 2. Overall, though, the system has a great value...it has the currently best online service (though the price turns me off), a big selection of games (though it's missing many BIG titles, but it's not as bad as the Xbox), and it's reasonably priced. I'd consider buying one, but I know I'd only get it to play through Halo 3 once or twice...plus, I've heard a lot of problems about stability with it. Based on the Xbox, I don't think the 360 will do amazing better with sales. The only people I know with an Xbox/360 are Halo players.

Wii - I love the idea of the motion sensing controller, and it feels so good as well. The price is great, and the VC is awesome. Still, it's a highly underpowered system. As much innovation that the controller can provide, it won't match up to some of the non-motion-involved innovations that the 360 or PS3 will be capable of. Also, I feel the game selection will go the way of the Gamecube, that being the only worthwhile games will be Zelda, Mario, and SSB. From what I've gathered from people in my town, they've quickly grown bored of the system, despite how cool it is. The games coming up don't seem to exciting, save the few (like I mentioned). I'd compare the system to the DS. At first I thought it was "so cool" and I had to buy one. I stopped playing it about a year ago. There weren't enough great games for it, and the touch stuff just got old and repetitive. I feel the Wii will go the way of the DS...more for the little kids (or so they seem). Oh, and the online seems like it will suck. It is a cool system, though...but aside from the controls, I don't think it will offer much else (besides Zelda and Mario). Still, if you base the success of the console on sales, the Wii is and will likely continue to do extremely well. Based on how the DS did, I could see the Wii coming out on top or very close.

PS3 - What does the PS3 have to offer now? Not much. Blu-Ray...Resistance...free online...many broken piggy banks. Looking back at the PS2, it had a crappy launch as well (with games, at least). The PS3 has a lineup of some good looking games (Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, MGS4, FF XIII, Warhawk, LBP), but some look like they may disappoint (Lair, Heavenly Sword). Still, with the actual hardware in the system, and the fact that it's the next Sony system, I believe the PS3 has the biggest potential to succeed. Will it reach that? Who knows...maybe with a large price drop and more games. Actually, I think the cheap PS2 system and the large selection of games is what sold it so well (I mean, look...it's still selling well). There will have to be similar situations for the PS3...and if Sony wants to come out on top, they'll have to do that (at least the price). The online service is currently OK at best, but Home will hopefully change that (maybe, maybe not...it all depends on how it performs and if it offers a lot). Little Big Planet seems to be the type of game that will make the PS3 a system to own. Hopefully other developers tap into the PS3 and give us worthwhile games (Killzone 2, hopefully...the first was disappointing). I think the one thing that will sell the PS3 are the BIG titles that the 360 doesn't have (MGS4, GT5, FFXIII, etc). Talking with some people at my school, many want a PS3 and are saving up for it. I think once the big games come out, and an inevitable price drop occurs, the system will sell MUCH better.

Overall, I think this competition will be much tighter than last gen, but I still think the PS3 has the most going for it (based on the 2 previous consoles). Sony just needs to drop the price as well. The Wii doesn't seem like a gimmick, but I can see it losing interest with older audiences. The 360 has a lot to offer currently, but it bases its success too much on Halo and GoW.

I wouldn't count these sales as very important, especially based on each situation the systems are in...and that success is determined over a few years, not a few months to a year and a few months.

Bottom line...I'd get all consoles if I had enough money.

I had one and didn't care for it, it was way too gimmicky and shallow(Wii Sports). Couple that with weak online and no hidef..meh. But it doesn't matter they are owning the comp.

Super Paper Mario was fun... but that's about it. The Wii isn't leading Sony because of some amazing game library. They're leading them because of price and a new controller design (which feels pretty gimmicky when used in standard games that weren't designed specifically to utilize it).

My brother has one and never plays it. Who woulda thought.

It's kind of amusing that people say the Wii is meant solely for gaming, yet it has a weather application and internet browser, which even the XBOX 360 doesn't have. The Wii isn't nearly as "purist" as people make it out to be, and not that not being "pure" is a bad thing, but I hate people bringing it up when it's simply not true.

No, it is purist in the sense it wasn't built to be anything other than a gaming machine. The fact that it can browse weather/news/internet were merely unforeseen bonuses. The difference is that Nintendo isn't trying to sell the Wii claiming, "look, it can give you weather!" whereas Sony is really banking BR being a major selling point just as the DVD player of the PS2 was, of course there is a $300 premium you now have to pay...

That's a bunch of BS, shooting your projectile weapons with the wiimote is leaps and bounds better than doing it with the controller in the GC version.

I'd say those are good reasons right there, not to mention the fact that an Xbox without a hard drive is almost useless. Unless you always plan to start every game from the beginning and beat it one sitting, you need a device to save on. The Wii ships with internal memory. You have to buy a memory card for the 360, the 64MB cards retail for $40. You're already up to $90 more than the Wii. The 360 doesn't come with a game. Sorry, but the 360 is not a cheap system to get started with. For $250 the Wii comes with everything you need to take home and play a game.

The local Sam's Club actually had two Wii left in stock the other day. That is the first time I have seen them in stock anywhere locally since it was released. They had pallets of PS3's, though.

Ubisoft on the PS3 - "They have to decrease the price quite significantly."

Ouch. Sony's game division posted a $2billion loss for the last fiscal year because of the PS3 alone. This was the same year where the PS2 was still selling like gangbusters. If they are already losing ~$250 per console at $600 how are they going to afford a significant price cut even if they are able to reduce the cost of the PS3 slightly by taking out the PS2 chip and a reduction of cost for the Blu-Ray laser?

But the problem is your plan will never possibly work. Sony's other departments are booming and making up for poor PS3 sales. Microsoft used the same strategy with the original Xbox, they lost billions of dollars even after factoring in game sales and Xbox live.

The PS3 won't fail simply because Sony can afford to lose 100x as much money than they already have. We're talking about two corporations that do not only deal in game consoles. Your wish will never come true because there are already millions of PS3s sold and exclusive titles that are nearing completion. You lost your argument before it even began.

If you don't want to buy a PS3, then you won't get to play the exlusives. Ultimately the PS3 will only drop in price if people stop buying it, so keep that in mind if you do see an exlusive that you want to play right then. Hold onto your money for a bit longer and hope for a price drop.

That's really not what he said at all. Sony's not going to stop making consoles. That's all there is to it. They're just as likely to stop making consoles as Microsoft, who took a far larger loss on the original Xbox (even after game sales and years of media promotion and development) than Sony has on the PS3 (before accounting for game sales and with very little time to judge its progress).

That would be like suggesting Microsoft should drop from the console market just because the Xbox was such an utter bomb. I doubt even the PS3 will lose that much money in the long run, since the original Xbox never had any good exlusives (even Halo came to PC).

The $400 Xbox is already a signal that people are willing to pay retarded prices. It's been a year and a half since its release and there has yet to be a price drop (although you can find nice bundles if you know where to look). Now the Xbox Elite is going to cost even more, which is just one more flag.

So Sony failing this round wouldn't accomplish your goal in any way. In fact, if you want to compare the PS3 to an upgraded Xbox 360, Sony is offering the cheaper price. Offering the same hardware for less money is a bad thing?

So you're right, the only way to accomplish your goal would be for both MS and Sony to fail. And that's clearly not going to happen.
