<< honestly id it was $300 -$400 id buy one.....

or maybe not :/

why is it so expensive?the lcd excuse wears thin when 15" displays can be had @ your local wal mart for $300 ish

im not turning my nose up at it...just apple leaves me scratching my head with some of their gimmicks.
why dont they port OSX to pc???That would impress me :D
>>

They have Darwin for x86. Thats the core of Mac OS X. But why bother? You dont have to run Windows (in fact I encourage you to not use Windows). OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Linux, BeOS, etc all run on x86 hardware. But why use x86 hardware? Price, ok that works. Customization, ok again, good choice. State of the art? Heh, no. Sorry.

BTW, anyone else think its kind of wierd they chose the G4 for the new iMac? Maybe a new processor is coming out for PowerMacs (since the top of the line processor is usually reserved for the top of the line machines and the second tier processor is for the value machines).
>>

theres already info available about the G5.
>>

As in it is definitely coming out during this Mac Expo or the next shindig they have? *drool* :D

Way beyond the rumour sites, eh? Yeah, that iPhoto is sure ground breaking. <rolleyes>

No clock speed bumps whatsoever for G4s. Meanwhile Intel and AMD are almost involved in a third world war.

Actually, that is one nice system. It would fit perfectly in a space conscious area and it doesn't encompass the el crapo imac wastebasket look. Eliminating legacy hardware, a CPU that is efficient, and some ease of software and OS almost makes me want to think about getting one.

For $1300, it is not bad at all. However....

The amount of software that I currently have will not work with that.

Getting the software to make that apple comp read my stuff is adding to the cost.

I already have a working computer that does everything I want already.

Looks delicate.

Judging by the chassis, not much cheap upgradeability. Looks like if one wants to boost its power, they will have to plunk ANOTHER $1300 for their newer model 4 years from now while I can plunk less than $300 for more performance with mine 4 years from now.

Speaking of chassis, where's the second CD drive? Looks like no copying for you!!

Speaking of that too, no floppy. Sure that is dead with sending files by email or FTP but it is a nice security blanket. ;)

Also judging from the specs, while impressive for its size, some of us may want more power than that. Being a Geforce 2 MX will give it some points for games but I know most of us here will not settle for that.

And looks like something you find on a vanity table. ;)

If anything else, it has its good points.

Firewire! Such an add-on solution is somewhat costly for the PC. This machine has it integrated for you already.

DVD-RW. Also costly for the PC while for that thing, it is there for you to use and it is $1300 and we all know how much those drives alone cost.

Flat screen LCD as well with the price.

If I heard right, their OS is easy to use as well.

So it has its tradeoffs. But even so, it is sure nice to see them deviate from the toilet bowl look.

And I still want to keep my Cordless freedom optical and my wooden box. ;) :)

There is plenty of software out there that is free. Plus, upgrade slow. It wont hurt as much then. Definitely a valid point though.

<< I already have a working computer that does everything I want already. >>

Then why worry about it?

<< Looks delicate. >>

I thought the iBooks did too, but mine is fairly sturdy.

<< Judging by the chassis, not much cheap upgradeability. Looks like if one wants to boost its power, they will have to plunk ANOTHER $1300 for their newer model 4 years from now while I can plunk less than $300 for more performance with mine 4 years from now. >>

Macs have never had good upgradibility. But they last forever. Check prices of older Macs, they are still fairly expensive compared to PCs the same age.

<< Speaking of chassis, where's the second CD drive? Looks like no copying for you!! >>

Create an iso and burn that.

<< Speaking of that too, no floppy. Sure that is dead with sending files by email or FTP but it is a nice security blanket. ;) >>

scp and ssh are part of Mac OS X and *MOST* other modern Operating Systems.

<< Also judging from the specs, while impressive for its size, some of us may want more power than that. Being a Geforce 2 MX will give it some points for games but I know most of us here will not settle for that. >>

PPC is not a gamer's platform right now.

I thought it would be a cute thing to keep recipes in on my kitchen counter.

Beats the hell out of USB, even though it probably has that too.

The best consumer OS out there right now ;)

looks cool and the hardware is finally up to par...

it's funny how something like this would only work for apple...in the pc market, no PC looking like this would go anywhere...after all, no upgradability...

With the ibook so near in price (by apple standards) the only reason I can see to get this is the "superdrive"

Thats the one I have I think. Ive got quicktime pro (yes, I paid for it, dont ask why :p), and I can save streaming quicktime to my hard drive.

I think the new iMac is pretty slick, and the US price doesn't look too bad. Bit close to the iBook perhaps, but not too bad still.

Pricing for Europe is ridicoulus, as usual for Apple. They'll not gain market share like this (IMO they don't want to anyway).

For a consumer system it's very very good, I think. Nothing missing once you get to the DVD model.

They still can't get the gaming aspect right though. If I was Jobs, I'd talk to Sony to make sure the next iMac is PS3 compatible out of the box ;).

the iMac is a consumer (non enthusiast) machine. Its made for mom and pop. say mom and pop buy a digital camera and they take some pictures, how do they get those pictures onto their computer to print them out, or put on a website.

the PC way. install software, reboot machine, plugin camera, download pictures, open image editing program, save picture, open html editing application, create layout, upload website

the iMac way. plugin camera, application opens, click on import, select which pictures you want on your website, click on make website.

granted this is the mac sided argument for usability. But which would you rather have your mom and pop using? oh yeah and then theres iMovie, iDVD, and iTunes. all integrated apps that work out of the box, and work well.

Macs are slower, alot slower, about 1500 MHz slower in fact. but does speed actually matter to your mom and pop? Yes i know that they are getting more speed for their money with a wintel machine. but with a mac they get ease of use and stuff that works, and they wont be calling you up as much asking questions of how to do things.

If you want to be a gamer, get a wintel machine. You will definitely be able to play more games faster with it. But of course you could always buy a PS2, dreamcast, XBox or GameCube.

only the first time. on #2:
plug in camera, download pictures, with xp it AUTOMATICALLY launches the program (it lets you set that up IF YOU WANT the first time around. god forbig you dont want to run the app right now, you're screwed on the mac), save pictures, use some software that makes a website.
