Maybe you all aren't Mac people (I'm not), but it seems Apple will be releasing a redesigned iMac at MacWorld San Fran.

While over at The Inquirer I stumbled upon this piece HERE. Take a gander at what Apple's come up with now...

looks like a kitchen appliance. probably performs like one too ;) it will probably cost a lot because of the LCD.

edit: looks like $1300 for entry level. you could build one FAST PC for that price! they cite a dell P4 costing $2200, but:
1. p4 = costly
2. OEMs = ripoff

even a PC with a flat panel would probably be cheaper. now, fitting a standard PC into that case might be a challenge ;)

I sure hope it isn't all white. I'm not buying an iMac unless it is teal...

I think they have done a good job in the aesthetics department. I still don't like the idea of combining the display and system into one entity, but hey, I know a lot of people do.

I have seen rumors of the use of dual processing even in low end systems. Even if this isn't true, I don't know why you think Macs perform poorly. Their CPU's are very efficient. They run especially well for audio/image editing.

"with a Pentium-crushing 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor" (stolen from here
bwahahaha
yeah, maybe pentium I's or even p2s... but after that, apple needs to find a larger benchmark suite.

edit: the 800 is the high end. regular is 700mhz.
why do I think its slow? read some benchmarks - there are very few things PPC processors are good at. gaming tends not to be one of them (at least at the clock speeds motorola has managed to get)

<< Not just easy to use, it?s easy to expand
Adding memory or installing an AirPort Card is simple, even for first-time computer users. Beneath the base is an access cover held in place by four screws. Remove the cover and you?ll see slots for additional memory (up to 1GB) and an AirPort Card. Images printed under each of these slots show you how memory and the AirPort card fit in the base when properly installed, so you don?t even need to refer to a manual.
>>

wow. take off 2 screws on my PC, drop in ram. airport - 2 case screws, one pci screw, drop in 802.11b wireless card. they dont' seem to want you to upgarde the hard drive, or god forbig the processor. oh... and it strikes me that upgrading the CD might be nearly impossible ;)

edit: they also mention how easy it is to set up the net - I just put together a sony system for someone. it came with XP home. all you had to give it was phone #, user and password. the mac can't be that much easier

you're all (with a few exceptions) short-sighted pc gaming zealots. i bet you never worked on a mac and in spite of that you are oh-so conviced that they're slow, hot-running kitchen appliances. and always complaining about how your games would run. sheesh

and you'd also be laying on the ground.

I saw some stuff about 1ghz and beyond macs which would be nice, and i do admit that OSX is a large improvement GUI wise over OS 9. I have used macs enough to know that i definitely like PC's better (taken a few graphics courses on them and such, networked them, fixed them). PC's are cheaper, faster, and windows (XP and 2000) are better than their OS no matter how much I and everybody else hates microsoft.

i'm a short sided pc gaming zealot, but i see the value in what jobs is trying to do. hey, it will do well in the marketplace. truth is, i got my mom and my wife each on duron 700 systems and they will not for the forseeable future need to upgrade. comon, be honest, if i traded their machines for xp 2000+ would they be able to tell the difference? not for 98% of what they do.

so, for people like them, this new machine might be EXACTLY what they are looking for. not all technological improvements have to be in the area SPEED only. especially those of you that claim to hate intel, you've sure bought into their argument that MORE SPEED = BETTER.

thats just not true for 90 % of the world at this time. mb ever.

I gotta admit that thing is really cool looking. And the specs are pretty impressive. I'm sure this thing will sell really wel since it targets the average computer user, a person that would probably prefer OS X over Windows 2k and probably XP.

Looks pretty damn sweet. Still I would probably never consider using an Apple unless I got into video editing or some type of content creation.

I thought it would look good in my kitchen, and I like Macs. I also like this design, its pretty sweet.

Gunbuster, and that never happens to Microsoft? :)

I'm a PC user, but if I weren't playing games, I'd use macs in a heartbeat. Oh yeah, I'd have to expand my computer budget at the same time :) The local computer lab has the now defunct g4 cubes and some nice flat panel displays, which are exceptionally nice for all my word processing needs.

Apples are stylish, and you pay a price premium for that, but they're good at what they do. Simpler. Rarely is reformatting needed, and I haven't seen problem one about Huge Security Holes in 10.1 like I have in XP :) Nor do I have to run around disabling all their stuff. Oh, no x86 ISA either. In this reporter's humble opinion, they aren't slow because they're crappy chips necessarily, they're slow because they're burdened with people who don't care for optimizing anything for their chips.

I heard a rumor about apple moving to the sledgehammer in the not too distant future. Wouldn't that be great??

Anyway, not for me now, but not something to scoff at either.

They have Darwin for x86. Thats the core of Mac OS X. But why bother? You dont have to run Windows (in fact I encourage you to not use Windows). OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Linux, BeOS, etc all run on x86 hardware. But why use x86 hardware? Price, ok that works. Customization, ok again, good choice. State of the art? Heh, no. Sorry.

BTW, anyone else think its kind of wierd they chose the G4 for the new iMac? Maybe a new processor is coming out for PowerMacs (since the top of the line processor is usually reserved for the top of the line machines and the second tier processor is for the value machines).

exactly. while i dont think i really like this new imac's look, or apple much for that matter, you guys are all criticizing it not because you have valid reasons, but because you are all close minded morons who are into computers probably because it makes you feel manly. well, congratulations. go get on your XP 2000+ and play some CS under WinXP and brag to your friends about how big your penis is because you have a fast computer, not to mention, of course, that you are better than everyone else.
