Apple VS Microsoft pole

Should've added a "both" option for the cell phones. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who has multiple active lines at once. Have a Nokia 6120 Classic and an iPhone 3G.

Windows XP on everything, including work computer. Thinking about a dual boot system with Linux/Windows.

I own a number of iPods.

Phone is a Samsung.

Apple doesn't offer me anything that would improve my life. I can pretty much do anything I want on a windows platform while with a mac, I'd have to pay so much more. I don't buy products just to stare at it or it's OS so as long as it isn't obnoxious and riced out looking, what I use is fine.

Vista desktop.

No mp3 player, although I did have an iPod at one time. Use my phone now.

Samsung phone.

I believe this is a call out thread.

That said I used to be a Mac user but I switched to Windows, both to have access to more software and to be able to pay less for better hardware. OS X has never felt fast to me, not even on the fastest Macs, but Windows is always super fast. I used to have a PowerBook G4... oh man was that thing bad. Slow with the OS it shipped with (10.4), even slower with 10.5, and incompatible with 10.6. What great long-term support there. "Macs will last you years" my white ass. No they won't.

Oh and I don't like paying 5x market value for RAM and hard drives, some of which can't be upgraded without voiding the warranty.

since when?

you'd have to be a sucker to buy extra ram or a hard drive from them anyway. thats what newegg, crucial, amazon and all are for. thats why they all come with instructions for people not that savvy to change out those things in the whole lap top line and the pro line, the imac being the only exception with the hard drive.

MP3 player? (Total Votes: 90)

iPod/Shuttle/Touch/etc

Other MP3 player

This one please me, I expected a much bigger disparity.

I've been using ipods since G1's and would consider getting an iphone if they weren't limited to AT&T.

I'd consider getting a macbook if it didn't require a several thousand dollar investment on an OS I've only ever used in passing.

if I could pay a hundred bucks or whatever to throw the Mac OS on my desktop and dual-boot, I probably would just to try it out.

I have an iPhone 3G, a 13" MacBook Pro, and a Windows 7 desktop. Since I got the MacBook Pro, I rarely use my desktop. I love the glass touchpad and 7 hours of battery life.

forgot a choice for winmo phones. i wonder how many of the "other" in there are smart phones with winmo on them.

i have a gen1 nano i won at a convention years ago, my kids have iTouches and somehow i inherited a shuffle from somewhere. all my puters have either XPPro or W2k on them.

I have an MBP, Airport, and 5th gen iPod for my car. My 2 desktop PCs are currently running Vista, and I have a BB.

Computers
1. macbook pro 17" for work (rarely used portably and docked to an Acer 24" LCD) - Leopard
2. iMac 24" (2008 model) for home/freelance work - Leopard and Win 7
3. macbook black (2008 model) docked as a desktop with a 24" LCD for home (email checking /casual stuff computer) - Leopard and Win 7
4. Home built AMD X2 system, in dire need of an upgrade (used as a HTPC in my bedroom and as a media server for my xbox360) -Win 7
5. MSI Wind White for couch surfing, running Windows 7
6. HP Mini 110 Pink - couch surfing (wife), running Windows 7

Phones
1. Palm Pre x 2
2. Blackberry curve for work
Former iPhone user.. Miss it.. Sniffle. But it was a work phone. After I broke it they replaced it with the curve, which I hate and never use

MP3
1. Zune 30gb
2. Sony MP3 player (16gb) - OUTSTANDING sound quality
3. iPod mini RED (old school one without video features)

I had a weird falling out with Apple... And I'm not exactly sure why. I think it's because I now work with a Mac 40 hours a week, so Apples are oddly corporate to me. And file organizing's a mess in Leopard if you use it full time (it's fine for casual use). I lose things all the time and I *hate* it. I feel in control of my documents/workfiles under Windows. I think that's how I feel about the whole ecosystem - Apple tries way too hard to control what you do with your equipment, in an effort to force you to "simplify." File system organization, mice (no right click), etc... I feel freer on a PC.

Going forward, I'm pretty sure I'll buy MS/Sony products, but the Apple TV is tempting if only because it's so small and cheap.

This weekend I'm updating my iMac to Snow Leopard...

Nah, not a call out thread, really more of a point really...

The fanboys make it seem like you're one or the other, while the reality is at least with the voters here...

25%+ own both Apple & MSFT OS based computers

More than half of us have some Apple sourced product.

That's pretty good for a company that was irrelevant not too long ago.

The Mac Mini is difficult (not impossible) to upgrade, even just the RAM. Prying at it with a putty knife? Not too much fun. And I've actually done it before and replaced both the optical drive and the RAM, but like I said, it wasn't something I'd want to do again.

With the iMac, of course, you can't upgrade the hard drive, which kinda sucks.

My PowerBook couldn't have its hard drive upgraded without voiding the warranty either. I know they've changed that since then, but Apple's all over the place when it comes to allowing upgrades. They could remove that capability at any time. They did it with the iMac (early G5 iMacs had an easily removable backplate that let you access all the internals, a feature they removed in later revisions).

The iMac and Mini are both too expensive for what you get. Partly because Apple knows they can charge more and still get plenty of sales, and partly because they use laptop components, which are slower and more expensive than desktop components. Makes for a sleek form factor but at the cost of expandability and power. I know a lot of people don't need expandability but some people like being able to upgrade their computer a little instead of just throwing it out and buying a new one every few years.

Macs are good for some people but not geeks or people with limited budgets who need a powerful, capable machine. They're better for casual home users who can afford the extra cost.

Win only
No
Creative and Cowon
No smartphone i have zero use for one
no apple anything
i voted win to keep it close

I am a Microsoft guy. I use MS OS's on all my machines. I used Windows Mobile for many years but recently switched to WebOS and the Palm Pre which also doubles as my MP3 player so no Ipod either. I did own a first generation Touch for a while but there just wasn't enough to it to justify the price IMHO. My wife has a first gen Zune and loves it, I'll likely get her the new one for Christmas. Apples are fine but the computers just cost to much for what you get. If they ever made the OS available by itself and more developer friendly for drivers and such I would give it a hard look for a dual boot set-up.
