The ironic thing is it's mostly Android users who update quicker than anyone else, always trying to find the next best thing or the 'perfect' device.
Its not ironic its just that android comes out with new phones faster. If apple came out with a new iphone 6++ tomorrow that had 2g of ram instead of one and everything else was the same people would still be standing in line for it.

On a side note the argument that 1 g of ram is more than enough would pretty much come to a halt.

Well one of the 'advantages' of Android, I hear, is that manufactures don't 'force' you to update your device. Yet Android users seem to being forced to update their devices the most often!

IMHO (lol you guys love my opinions) android peaked in late 2012. When the 4S was out and the Apple maps fiasco, no true 4GLTE, and while "it's only dual core" when the S3 had quad core was when Apple was in trouble in mobile.

I disagree. Once they fix the early bugs in lollipop I'm sure that it will be a very solid improvement of the OS.

I base this on a couple of app developers showing up on the twit.tv and saying that apps for the OS are running smoother in large part thanks to the new run time.

Yes as a result of the customization options you do have to dial in or tweak the phone a bit. However, some people expect to do (and even enjoy doing) that.

Yeah, there's a secret body of Android "enforcers" that come around every 6 months or so and forcibly smash our old devices so we have to get new ones.

They are... entertaining?

It might be nicer if they were slightly more rooted in reality or that you didn't present them as facts and extrapolate from them, but for entertainment value they are OK.

iOS is just way, way more polished.

Android used to be more customizable AND more powerful. Now it's just more customizable.

IMHO (lol you guys love my opinions) android peaked in late 2012. When the 4S was out and the Apple maps fiasco, no true 4GLTE, and while "it's only dual core" when the S3 had quad core was when Apple was in trouble in mobile.

That was when android could have taken over. It had LTE, big screens, better navigation/gps.

Now, apple dominates both hardware and software.

Hey if they can pull it off, more power to them. If Google came out with a superior OS, and HTC or Samsung made hardware of equal quality to Apple, then I would switch. I switched from a iphone 4S to a Galaxy S4. Didn't like it, but I gave it a shot.

Android's problems don't stop with fixing Lollipop's GUI/interface issues. The play store is broken and security is 100% a huge issue. On the hardware side, their biometrics are just junk compared to Apple.

I know people enjoy customization. I think Android to this day is better for that.

Hardware wins for Apple:

Superior screens (IZGO LCD lasts 10x as long as AMOLED, has no burn in, and uses less power).

Superior LTE (carrier aggregation on the ipad air 2).

Vastly superior Biometrics

Superior machined aluminium cases

Vastly superior processors

Superior connectivity (lighting cable)

Superior Style *SUBJECTIVE*

ANDROID HARDWARE WINS

Superior size

Superior weight

superior thickness

Security isn't only an issue for Android. People are looking for vulnerabilities for every OS mobile or not and they are finding them as well.

Superior screens (IZGO LCD lasts 10x as long as AMOLED, has no burn in, and uses less power).

This in my opinion is not a clear win because while burn in exists for AMOLED screens someone would have to disable the auto shutoff of the screen and have a static image for a very long time on the screen. That is not a typical usage case for the average user and even under normal usage the person would likely upgrade the device before burn-in was noticeable.

It's kind of complicated comparing hardware to hardware because there are quite a few makers of phones who use the Android OS... while only one manufacturer uses iOS.

One would have to make a chart of all the different phone manufacturers to quantify hardware wins imo.

As for superior build... well some materials feel better than others however

http://oneofthenine.com/

build quality isn't clear cut. All phones will bend with enough pressure put on them but afaik the iphone 6 plus is the only phone that bends mostly in the same place and if you believe the owners they weren't abused.

I put a case on my smartphone in anyways and do not carry anywhere except the front pocket of loose pants if necessary... it's in a jacket pocket during colder months.

I bet the revision 2 of the iphone 6 plus has better reinforcement around the volume switch area.

What are you guys putting on your phone that requires storage space? The only thing I have physically stored on my phone is pictures and apps. Everything else is streamed from the cloud.

The DCIM folder on my SDcard has about 25gb in it alone.

There's also a few films and TV shows synced from plex.

Some music. A bunch of podcasts.

You're being a bit over the top, Android has it's place, iOS has it place. Anyone who say anything about one being vastly better overall than the other is a fan boy, a fan boy hater or someone who hasn't used whatever OS they're pooping on extensively enough. If they've even used it at all. I own both platforms and have done more modding on both than most people have on the single 1 they use. Both are stupidly powerful and customizable. I personally give the nod to iOS, but I can't discount Android 4.4.4 like it's a 3rd world country OS. Just because I love one doesn't mean I have to hate the other. Android fans who cry about iOS haven't used it and seen how many damn tweaks are on Cydia. It's absolutely mind blowing how many repo's there are and how full of tweaks and hacks exist. iOS people who whine about Android probably haven't used it outside of maybe a stock phone for a few minutes. Give either platform a real shot for 30 day you'll like it.

Music (FLAC/High Bitrate MP3), Video (1080p+), Pictures, Apps.

Cloud is not an option as bandwidth is limited in the UK and most "unlimited" deals have "soft" limits then they throttle you to stone age speeds, makes even SD video streaming a nightmare.

I was being silly, yes. Just pointing out that there are today much fewer reasons to stick with android.

Do you remember 2011? Android was pretty amazing back then, hardware-wise especially.

I really think that BOTH Google and the hardware manufacturers need to improve A LOT. Hardware especially, they will never have the fit and finish of Apple but they should have MORE features, not less. Lollipop isn't my main gripe with android anyway, it's more security flaws and hardware issues.

I think my Z3 screen is better than my IP6. I have never seen burn in....ever...in any phone.

After working years in biometrics I want nothing to do with it on my phone with the technology they are using. And honestly, neither should you.

Aluminum isn't hard enough with those dimensions and specks.
i.e., too thin.

Processors. The last generation or half a generation ago is enough for 99% of the folks out there for raw power. More people are interested (in a passive way) of SoC features like,DSP or fast charging etc.

Lightning cables were never "features" it was more like "suckas".

You are grasping at straws.

For me a huge reason to stick with android is value for the money. The iphone in my eyes is way overpriced, but people can spend their money however they want. Thats not an issue to me how other people spend their money, but i have a say in the way i spend.
Seriously I dont know what people actually need in a phone that isnt already available by all platforms. Im running a samsung s4 and will prob use it until it breaks.
We can cherry pick all the data we want to say which system/ phone is better but take away the label and see who can ctually tell a difference. Talking with a friend yesterday who has an iphone 6 mentioned several of her friends who also got the iphone 6 all got cracked screens. To be precise 6 of them. Im sure we can find an example where that happened to android users as well.

Really? If anything I think android is in a stronger position since then. 2011 devices gave the edge to apple for sure from a smoothness/UI perspective. ICS came out in late 2011 and that was really the turning point for android IMHO. If anything 2012 was the year I'd say Android passed apple. Quad core were hitting and getting enough HP to make the weightier android OS fly.

Apple has played catch up a bit on features since then, but iOS 8 is still just putting stuff in that android has had for years. Their industrial design is stellar as always, but their specs are only equaling the best androids in a few ways and they're behind in others. However I don't think iOS will *ever* beat android outright on lists of specs and features. Its not really their design philosophy. I certainly give them that nothing is as polished as iOS devices. That's been true all along.

Sucks for iPhone users. The worst part of owning an Apple product is future update slows down the whole experience (unlike a Nexus 7 FHD which has gotten better and faster). A miserable 1gig RAM will become a problem in no time if history is to repeat itself and Apple diehards like delerium will have to upgrade very soon.

I agree although I would not add further to this already-hijacked thread. This thread was supposed to be about an Apple lawsuit initiated by Apple users because of inadequate/disappearing storage capacity, but from the looks of it the present discussion has drifted far, far away from it.

One thing I find puzzling is this weird sense of entitlement that "Apple has to maintain xx% of margin" or something along the line that I thought I read in this thread. I have no idea where that idea comes from, how such a position is justified, or whether such idea is applicable to other corporations than Apple. (It seems quite anathematic to free-market ideal) Suffice to say I could not care less how much profit/loss Apple or any other corporation generates. And I believe that has zero bearings in the context of evaluating merits of individual products. Nor do I believe such a ridiculous idea should somehow factor into judging a corporation's illegal activities. (except as an aggravating factor, perhaps, considering that it sounds very much like a rent-seeking behavior)

I did not go back and re-read the thread so please forgive me if there was no such discussion.

That is more of a truism because Apple never "make" anything on their own, kind of like Dell/HP. They never invent or manufacture anything. They are more like designer-contractors. They have to use what is available to them unlike Samsung, Sony, Motorola, etc. who actually produce physical parts. Open an iPhone and all you see are parts manufactured by someone else, and assembled by Foxconn. I think the A-line SOCs are one of the few things that Apple have actually created from scratch. (even that may be arguable) Oh, and the sapphire glass thing that did not work out. ^^

But they do have their own software that drive hardware sales, which is an advantage that obviously no one else has.

Apple also contribute a lot of resource to the development of new technologies too. So although new display and manufacturing technologies might not have Apple's name on them, they have probably sunk a considerable amount of resource into the development of that new technology.

I personally don't care how much profit (or not) Apple makes, but in the world of business, the health of your business depends entirely on how much profit you make. In that regard, Apple is in pole position and appear to be either maintaining or extending the strength of their business despite the vicious competition from below and the fall from grace of their most intimate competitior (Samsung) and it's from making wise decisions around storage options and pricing, etc, that Apple achieve that.

Apple's competitors don't make the kind of products that can maintain high profit margins.

Hearsay, and a pure speculation.

You probably misunderstood me or maybe I did not explain myself clear. I have nothing against corporations competing in the market on their products' merits. Somewhere in this thread, however, there were a talk how Apple have to maintain xx% of margin, presumably regardless of the quality of their products. I pointed out that is a wrongheaded idea that will only find support from Apple's employees or those who share financial interest with Apple.

Apple's competitors don't make the kind of products that can maintain high profit margins.
You forgot to add "in my opinion."
