Yes, Finder has built-in burning.

but can it add to a cd that has already been burned once?

in other words, burn some files to the cd, take it out, next day come back, put the cd back in and add more files to it.

Nope, it finalizes the disk by default. Lame:roll:

Why do so many people want the MBPs? That many of you have a need for a very powerful portable machine? I'm surprised.

It's fast, nice looking, fairly well built, has a great screen, a camera that's pretty neat, runs OSX and now Windows, has decent battery life for being a powerful notebook (3.5 hrs+), and is actually competitively priced, for an Apple product.

WOW 3.5 hours!? You don't say! 3.5hours is actually pretty sh1tty for a laptop, most laptops I've used get around 3 hours battery life and those are "average" laptops, my thinkpad IIRC can get about 8 or 10 hours of battery life..

this laptop is a legitimate desktop-replacement laptop that is somehow only 5.5 lbs.

$1799 != $1700.

And that's only with 512MB ram...

I'm not even going to bother responding to you as you've already made up your mind.

Yep, also note that the battery life quoted is with the screen at full brightness and I believe wifi and bluetooth on. The 12"ibook is quoted as getting around 5hrs of battery life, and in a classroom situation I have been able to get around 6.5 hrs out of it, since I don't need bluetooth obviously, and wifi I turn on and off when I need to use it. The screen brightness can go way down also due to the flourescent lighting overhead. :)

I would guesstimate that the macbook pro could get around 4.5hrs of battery life typing notes in the conditions described, which is absolutely fine for me. Some of the lecture halls actually have power outlights right on top of the desks for laptops, wihch would allow me to charge it up during the day.

yay...now we can pay double the price for hardware for running the same software

Find me a laptop, or any PC for that matter, that can run the latest OS X natively....oh wait, that's right, THERE AREN'T ANY!

This update isn't for people who want to run only Windows. This is for people who've chosen a superior OS but also want to run the occasional Windows-only game/application. If you're running out to buy a MBP just to run Windows, you're a moron.

Superior to what? I'd hardly call OSX superior, it's the most bloated POS operating system next to vista.. Want superior? Get Linux and quit b1tchin. Apple computers and products are for people who shop at whole foods, have credit card debt and drive an SUV that will never see "mud" or "snow" in it's lifetime.. <----In otherwords, morons.. Like somebody else said in this thread, apple is INFACT the new bose..

Actually I do run Linux at work, Ubuntu on my Inspiron 9200 and CentOS on a desktop. While I love Ubuntu (not to crazy about RH-based distros) it's simply not as user-friendly as OS X. Plus the user interface beats Gnome or KDE any day of the week. I'm not going to argue about the bloat issue, you have a point there, but it's the price you pay for user convenience and the feature-set that OSX provides. Sure you can get a bare-bones Linux environment running with a bare-bones window manager, but I choose not to. When I say "superior OS", my argument was mainly towards XP, but in some respects it's better than Linux (feature-wise, perhaps not performance wise).

However your wild-ass assumptions about Apple owners is way off base and you know it. I also fail to see how Apple's can be equated to Bose. Bose equipment has great marketing but poor performance. Apple too has great marketing but for the money, you'd be hard pressed to find another laptop that beats it. The only thing I know that comes close is the new Acer, but it too is $2500. I'd rather get Apple's build-quality and support over Acer for that much money. The Lenovo T60P also does a great job competing, but it's also $500-$1000 more expensive.

It worked perfectly for me on my 2.0Ghz Core Duo 20"

as you can see here: http://www.mywebdump.us/images/about.jpg

Computed Super Pi's 1M computation in 30s exactly
Got a 3808 in 3dmark05

Ran it all day with no blue screens.. and then restarted and went right back into my OS X install - no data loss at all, with about 100gb currently being used on the disk.

This is a great thing because Apple does make good hardware, and some people just need XP for stuff. Now we just need a way to run OS X on a PC for those of us who like to upgrade and have control over our hardware but still want to use Apple's OS.

I don't know if you ever seen and touched a Powerbook but they are heads and tails above any PC laptop. Go into frys they have powerbooks and everything else on display you'll see.

i think the thinkpad line is close to the quality of the apple line. but other than that.

i do like the new Compaq/HP line of laptops tho.

Quality maybe thinkpad can compete but not in industrial design. Same reason apple owns MP3 player market

mb not in looks but the thinkpads are pretty well designed.

oh btw, there is one feature in XP that i haven't been able to find in OS X, mb one of you OS X experts can enlighten me.

with Windows XP, we have the ability to write and add onto a written cd using Windows Explorer, no 3rd party software needed, no open close sessions, no formating cd etc.

does OS X have anything like that?
Burning multi-session with Mac OS X is a PITA because you have to use Disk Utility to create each image/session. As such, the semantics are (probably) different too since there would be no concept of update/delete operations on the filesystem.

Wish list: MacBook Pro with Merom, MR1800, and at least 160GB storage (7200 rpm). ;)

Anyone looking to buy a Dual G4? :D

This is great news for small time Video Editors. There are good apps for both systems and it would be a Godsend not having to spend money on both systems just to run all of them. If windows apps can run well on the mac hardware, I just might ditch my PC and go full mac.

Can someone post some Battlefield benchmarks? :p

Then it's not a desktop replacement  Just because you could replace your desktop with this laptop, doesn't make it by definition a desktop replacement. Hell anything can be a desktop replacement, all it needs to do is run the same sh1t as a desktop computer and you technically replaced your desktop. A desktop replacement by definition would be one with around the very very best performance and upgradability, and at the same time be portable, hence those 10LB laptops...

No, you're the dumbass... Is it possible we're related? Oh of course not! No, logic has no place in a thread about apple computers! That explains it all!

Further proof that thinlizzy has no life and should one day (hopefully) die from a fire caused by his brand new apple notebook due to it's shoddy cabling conenctor. The cyanide in the apple thinlizzy consumed at the mac expo was improperly added and so he underwent heavy hallucinations due to improper dosage (normally lethal and in rare cases causes hallucinations) and because he had a 'killer time', he now believes he owes his life to the apple corporation and steve jobs. :)
