Both are around $227 billion, but with AAPL slightly bigger than MSFT.

Discuss.

yeah but people can't slip a $ somewhere cleverly into Apple so M$ wins as the tech company we love to hate.

Also, I do not think I have ever been on a contract with paid Apple consultants. My current project has at least 3....

Apple doesn't pull in near as much per quarter as Microsoft does. Several billion less. And I'm talking about revenues, not just pure profits.

Apple is not "bigger" than MS, considering the market share MS has over the OS market.

MS: 87.8% to Apple's 7.1%

You also have to ask yourself, if Apple is so much better than MS, why does Apple allow Windows installed on its products?

But...if you want to look at specific things...how does the Zune compare to the Ipod? What about pocket pc phones vs. iphones?

Define "bigger". MS is certainly successful in more markets, by a wide margin. If Apple consumer hardware were to suddenly fall out of favour with the public the whole company would sink. MS has it's fingers in enough pies that they can afford to lose entire markets without falling.

It should be pretty obvious at this point that the battle for the desktop is a thing of the past and that the industry has moved on to new markets. The same way Microsoft surpassed IBM by doing the mainframe to desktop transition, Apple is bypassing Microsoft on desktop to mobile devices.

I am not saying desktop operating systems are a dying market, but all the growth is in mobile right now. Things are even worse for Microsoft when you consider HP and Dell just dropped Windows 7 for tablet devices.

How does OSX compare to Windows? How does iWork compare to Office? MS is primarily a software company, of course they don't compete particularly favorably with a dedicated hardware vendor in hardware markets.

Someone better let MS know that they can stop making billions of dollars from Windows, Office, Visual Studio, et. al.

IMO, one possible reason could be because they were hoping to entice all the designers and 3d modeling professionals who use Autodesk products into buying their cute little hyped up Mac's instead. Autodesk products are not available for Mac. I don't think that worked out too well for Mac on that front. :)

I use 3ds Max and Autocad daily. I'll keep the easily upgradable and reconfigurable windows based rig my hubby built for me, tyvm. :)
