Meh, lithium ion battery problems are somewhat common with portable devices, I remember Dell had to recall a bunch a while back. Kind of sucks that Apple is going to receive all the bad PR for this when the blame probably lies with some cheap Chinese battery manufacturer.

The battery manufacturer tried to cover it up? Interesting.

People are probably just lighting them of fire to claim their warranty before it's up. And now that it is making the news, it's getting even easier. Maybe I should do it to mine, I think it's been almost a year...

Apple sells 200 million iPods, a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent catch fire. With no indication if the cause could have possibly been faulty wiring in the persons house, or improper use. I would say this shouldn't even be a story at all. I can make anything catch fire if I want to 😀
Can you make water catch fire?
NO, but I can put gasoline in the water and when that burns I can go "water burning seeee!" The water wouldn't be burning but I could make people believe it. iPods don't catch on fire, not enough to report on. People hate Apple so this becomes a story

"R U SERIOUS!?! 100 out of 200,000,000 iPods have caught on fire. OMG they're a fire hazard down with Apple!!!"
Thats the argument I use against gun haters.
Trust me, it doesnt work.

True, but Apple haters are worse. I bet some would turn this story into "iPods are more dangerous than guns!" lol

Nothing is worse than apple fanbois, especially ones that admit they cant afford their products anyway.

Of course that's all on Apple. I can't really blame them for wanting to keep it quiet, it doesn't sound like this is a very common problem. I mean if it's a design flaw that warrants a recall or something like that then they shouldn't be trying to keep it out of the news, but as QueBert pointed out, failures like this happen even with properly designed batteries. I guess we don't know for sure with Apple being so hush-hush about it, but it sounds like these failures constitute a very small fraction of the hundreds of millions of iPods Apple has sold. Unfortunately stuff like this just happens.

And FWIW I own an iPod, but would hardly consider myself to be an Apple fanboy. Much prefer PC over Mac, but I think their PMPs and phones are relatively solid products.

no, the haters are far worse, because 99% of them haven't ever touched an Apple product. At least the fanboys use them.

I'm not a fanboy, but I openly admit my iPod Touch is the baddest electronic device I have ever owned hands down. That doesn't mean I like Apple, it just means I like the Touch.

According to that article the settlement doesn't say you can't talk about your iPod exploding, it says you can't talk about the settlement. Big difference. Keeping settlements confidential is a normal practice.

nothing new, remember those sony laptop batteries?
always a chance with these batteries one will be bad.
i'm sure other brands have done it as well, people abuse the f*ck out of these things. only apple would make the news though
