Actually, you might be surprised at what software doesn't require the registry/windows directory settings/files to work. I have my drive partitioned into several parts, and photoshop installed on my Apps drive. I've formatted the OS partition several times, photoshop still works. Many games work as well. It's kind of nice, actually, I can keep my start menu clutter free by just having one folder with shortcuts to my programs (like photoshop and such).

I've looked at the ipod too a little, check General Hardware, there's a thread about a month ago about using it on a PC. I classify the ipod as "gateway hardware" though, I know Iif I buy one, I'm going to be so impressed that I'll just have to buy an ibook to go along with it. And I can't afford to dump $1600 on an ibook+ipod
