You need a plan to buy the phone at all... :) Even if you could somehow buy (Ebay?) it without a plan, it won't be activated without a plan (if iPhone 2.0 is like iPhone 1.0). So, yes.

questions about 2g vs 3g talk time:

1) why bother with 3g talk? are there parts of usa that only have 3g?

2) does 3g have a stronger signal? (are there situations where you'd be able to make a 3g call but not 2g)

3) will you be able to set data for 3g but talk for 2g?

I'm curious what the differences are between the $30 and the $45 wireless plans. The $45 is the "business" plan, but I'm wondering what makes you need a business plan vs. one that just connects to the internet?

I currently get my mail from exchange via a normal internet connection. I use AT&Ts "PDA" plan which is $40 a month, so if Ic an use the $30 plan, I would actually save money every month.

Hmm, I think you can deactivate the $30 data plan online immediately after you sign up.

So the *cheapest* plan would be the $40 for the phone but no data? Will they let you do that? I really don't care that much if I have data since I have wi-fi at most places and I don't need to browse when I don't.

$40 isn't too bad for a 2 year plan (not great though) but $70 is too high - especially since I wouldn't use the data plan anyway.

Yea I currently have metropcs and I can get unlimited everything for like 50 bucks a month. So even though i really want a iphone I dont think I will be getting one just because of the monthly cost, maybe someday they will drop it to a price I find reasonable.

Previously, AT&T required the data plan to be active on an smartphone for 3 months after you sign up, after which point you could keep just the voice. Dunno if its the same for the iPhone as I think we're venturing into uncharted waters here.

Man, I am so sold. I was waiting for proper GPS, and even though it seems like the mapping software might not be up to snuff, I have read that tomtom is already ready to rock.

The lower pricing is just icing on the cake. With this one device, I can replace my ipod, my gps and my cell phone, and that will more than cover the cost of the phone itself.

SWEET!

All thats needed now is a proper car dock that can power it and output that audio...hopefully in landscape.
Wait until the 3rd-party navigation software is available through App Store. Imagine Telenav with OpenGL-accelerated 3D mapping.

TomTom already annouced a GPS app.

Problem is a few of the cell phone features actually Require the data portion. Visual voicemail downloads your voicemail to the phone, you dont dial in to att for that on this device. I have heard that no edge on the current gen and the unlocked ones will dial in instead of downloading.

I think the same thing applies to creating a voicemail greeting. You record it on the phone then upload the data to att. Thats really all i can think of that requires it as far as the phone goes. It's obvious which apps require it so no need to go there. Just thought you should know.

They are unlockable, you don't have to sign a contract, they allow direct access to the filesystem (no need to use iTunes to move your music and videos around), you can get Skype and other SIP clients for it now...

They will hack the 3G iPhone too eventually, but the fact that you (probably) won't be able to buy one without signing a contract to agree to $70/month in charges will still make the original ones worth a reasonable amount of money.

Still, after July 11th, when all the early adopters buy the new one and Ebay their old ones, I think the price will fall a fair bit.
