iPhone 3G includes the new iPhone 2.0 software with both the iPhone SDK and key enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide over-the-air push email, contact and calendar syncing as well as remote wipe and Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to corporate networks. Yep, bottom of the product page at Apple shows;

Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

So its the same as before, but $199/$299 OTD, and you can unlock it if need be.

For some reason unknown by me, AAPL stock has been pretty much tanking all day-started at 185.64, went down to 175.75 before the announcement, bounced back a bit and is now headed south again.

From what I see so far, it looks like this is going to be a great product for Apple with lots of $$ in the future. I bet the lines will be twice as long as last year's when it hits the stores.

Apple stocks always tank twice a year WWDC and Macworld. Dunno why? Maybe Wild Speculation?

Its the same as before. You sign the contract once you get home and activate through iTunes. If you don't want AT&T, you unlock it and don't activate through iTunes. But as someone else suggested, T-Mobile won't be much use for the iPhone anymore since it doesn't support T-Mobile's 3g frequency.

It'll be the same as it is now. You can buy the phone, then before you activate it in iTunes, you unlock it.

Won't be able to take advantage of 3G speeds, though.

Same here. My wife and I just signed up for a new rate plan where we get 750 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, Fave 5, free mobile to mobile, and Hotspots@Home for $80/month which covers both our phones.

When i first got my new iPhone, i activated the sim it came with and threw away my old one (thats how they used to recommend doing it), Dunno if its still the same, but I imagine it is (unless your moving from one iphone to another)

And yes, you can add an iPhone to a current contract, it just starts 2 years from the Date of Purchase (not cumulative)

so the new 16gb iphone is $100 cheaper than the 16gb ipod touch...you can get more for less after unlocking the iphone to use the ipod features...
