Apple gets $207.8 million in incentives for Iowa data center

I guess these companies have finally learned from the example of the NFL building massive revenue-sucking monuments to avarice on the backs of delusional city councils and their tax payers. They just want theirs!
False equivalency is false equivalency. Waukee is being compensated for a shitload of municipal infrastructure improvements ($100mm)...they're reducing taxes for Apple...not eliminating them...nor are they subsidizing any building construction costs which is quite common with NFL stadium deals.

The only way the City loses money is if the adjusted property tax doesn't cover the increased municipal costs associated with the data center, which is highly unlikely. Good paying jobs are precious...especially for a backwater community like Waukee. ...
Wut? Waukee is a relatively affluent, and definitely thriving suburb of Des Moines. It is not a backwater by any means.

I don't know if this is really a good deal or not. It's certainly a plum to have an Apple data center in town. I'm not so sure it's worth over $200 million, however. Ultimately, that's between Waukee voters and their city council. At least it isn't another Foxconn giveaway.

After a good stint in LA, I grew up in Des Moines and know the area well....it's a small, semi-remote community which is why I called it a backwater. But it's definitely growing and becoming more affluent as the urban sprawl of West Des Moines approaches. Back in the day (actually not that long ago), it was nothing but a small farm town community well isolated from Des Moines.

Govt giveaways & subsidies are Free Market?

Who knew, right?
Waukee was undoubtedly competing with other municipalities and they were able to negotiate a deal that made sense for the community. Competition strikes at the heart of free market principles. Who knew, right?

It's definitely not the same thing, I agree. I'm merely comparing on the basis of a fabulously wealthy company getting a tax-payer funded birthday present from a municipality with the certainty of never being able to pay that back with the promised jobs/revenue generation that are being incentivized.

50 jobs @ 200mil? lol

why do you think they won because it "makes sense for the community?" Did the community approve this or did the city council?

Dependency on Gubmint cheese is obviously Free Market...

Did you not read the article I previously linked? This is all about perception it seems. You seem to think that giving a tax break is costing the community money...when, in fact, it isn't...it's actually increasing tax revenues for the community, revenues they would have never enjoyed otherwise. Also, you're completely disregarding all the other aspects of the deal that are very positive for the community...such as the $100mm Apple is giving them for infrastructure or the much greater likelihood of Waukee being able to attract other businesses and jobs to the area.

How recently have you been there? Waukee has seen tremendous growth. It isn't isolated any more. It's one contiguous urban area from eastern Des Moines to the west edge of Waukee. The area between Waukee and Adel is filling in, too, especially along Hickman/Hwy 6. It's a whole lot different that it was 20 years ago.

It's really too bad so much blue state tax money is used on these red areas always looking to undermine them.

That's a new variation on your usual divisive bullshit. We're all Americans & the least among us need our help no matter where they live or what they believe.

So all these red areas race to the bottom on taxation while the blue ones pay for all their welfare. Dumbshits show know a great deal when they see one.

Do you get scammed by other charities or only the GOP?

There are some astoundingly poor places & people in the lands that the Job Creators forgot. Like damned near third world poor, right here in America. Taking an attitude like yours just means it'll only get worse, not better, and that's not good for the Nation, at all.

Well, unless you're championing the FYGM attitude of the ultra right ultra wealthy degenerates who've had way too much say in how we run this country over the last 37 years.

What does that have to do with the question?

Isn't it weird world though where our local government are reduced to bribing companies to open factories? Doesn't it sorta prove how capital has achieved absolute dominance over labor?

Wow, wasn't aware there were so many Iowans or former Iowans on here. I live a bit further north (Ames) myself and have to agree with you. Anyone would be hard-pressed to call Waukee backwater anymore. It's become the suburban sprawl that is West Des Moines. And yeah, this seems like a pretty shitty deal, which is anti-free market because Apple is getting special dispensations. Either don't give special deals or lower taxes for all businesses in order to prevent the government from choosing the privileged.
