No they aren't.

MS had and still has a monopoly on desktop OSes.
Intal has and still has a monopoly on CPUs.

Apple DOES NOT have a monopoly.

They're getting pretty close to having one for high-end MP3 players, tablets, and online music distribution.

Most of you are either clearly biased being anti-Apple or blind. Which is expected for most of AnandTech.
It's clear that when you're innovative and popular other's will copy you. In a cheaper and shitter fashion.
it's a fair point.

prior to the Macbook Air, there were no other companies on the planet making silver laptops, and certainly, Apple was the only company in the world with the idea of making laptops as thin as possible.

to think otherwise is obviously showing an anti-Apple bias.

Correct. Also note the location of ports the over all form factor. The trackpad and keyboard.

It's like buying a Chinese allay rip off of a rolex.

The trackpad and keyboard.

Yes, LOL.

So.. Apple developed chicklet style keys, trackpad and even QWERTY keyboard was popularized by Apple.

I have to give where the credit is due though, Apple makes the best trackpads, period. Although a lot of others are catching up.

Oh.. look. Zenbook has two huge freaking buttons attached to the trackpad.

I usually don't post here...and I am certainly not wanting to get in the middle of this elementary school playground fight. Being a "child of both worlds", Each has their strong and weak points. It is totally up to what you, as an individual, want your device to be.

1. It is bad form (not to mention karma) to rip on a deceased person.
2. If Apple wants to sue for one thing or another, it's not for you to decide. It is up to the judicial system.
3. Apple fanboys and MS/PC fanboys are never going to agree. Let it be, man.
4. You are in the "All Things Apple" forum Apple-Bashing...um...were you bored?
5. At the end off the day it's all about personal choice.

in this instance, Apple isn't suing anyone, which is kinda why it's so slimy.

they're using their presence in the marketplace to strongarm manufacturers into not dealing with their competitors. I can't believe that would be legal in the US.

4. You are in the "All Things Apple" forum Apple-Bashing...um...were you bored?

it was created in OT, but moved into the Apple forum.

what if my personal choice was to buy a Zen, but now I can't because Apple is pressuring manufacturers into not making them?

If you feel like that then go do something about it. Bitching on a forum isn't doing much.
that applies to nearly every post ever made on the internet ;)

I've had a long-ass week and I can barely move, so a 1-man protest of Apple isn't in my immediate future, but that doesn't mean it's not a situation that's worth discussing.

Fair enough. I still don't think Apple is in the wrong.

Exclusive deals happen all the time. Like ATT - iphone deal. NFL Directv. NFL Madden Franchise. How is this any different from a legal standpoint.

Ok, so they aren't suing. My bad. It doesn't change the fact that its not up to us to decide. I haven't seen any negative effects on the marketplace as of yet.

As for using their "presence" in the marketplace to strong arm manufacturers, last I checked, the market is still dominated by PCs. That's out of Apple's league. That is strictly Intel and MS territory.

it was created in OT, but moved into the Apple forum.

I didn't know that. Thank you for setting me straight.

Archos, Zune, Zen...they are all out there, buy what you want. The only reason I can think of that people own iPods is that they like them. They were not forced, coerced or in any other way led to believe that they couldn't buy something else. They just (as any good company would) put themselves out there as having the better product.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't tried to patent a rectangle door and sued revery person who owns a home. Remember you don't need to actually create it to patent a shape.

This thread is no longer Off Topic, we rather like Apple products in this forum.

What moderator moved this thread to this forum, where only pro-Apple fanboys lurk and don't care to discuss reality?
Was the intention to kill this thread by producing no more intelligent points? Because everything is clearly over the head of fanboys on their knees before Apple, based on the obliviousness and blind love that can be read in recent posts. Disappointing, some people I had better hopes for.

Support for shady [and illegal?] business practices like Apple has seen fit to conduct is just sad. Imitation/flattery/copying is the nature of any high-stakes business. Apple cannot own the appearance they helped establish, especially considering how the average consumer has now made it plainly away that the entire concept of that minimal design, solid contrasts, etc etc etc, are all exactly the style they want with everything at the moment. So, guess what, other manufacturers are going to jump right in, and just so happens that Apple basically helped usher in/rode the waves of change into the new design mantra.

If you don't want it, don't buy it. Apple realizes half of the reason their products sell so well is because so many of their consumers are basically style-conscious over anything else. I know a few, but it is rare, that actually use their products for specific reasons that are valid in this day and age (prefer Apple's developer support/dev toolkits for their various products).
