In another non-surprising patent trolling move, Apple has made the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung their next target in German courts. In this latest trolling journey, the folks from Cupertino have decided that the unlock mechanism in the G-Nex infringes on their slide-to-unlock patent.

Here's the FOSS Patents link.
http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2012/01/apple-says-galaxy-nexus-infringes-slide.html

One of their most blatant examples of patent bullying yet. There is simply no basis to this lawsuit whatsoever.

German courts should fine Apple billions of dollars for wasting their time. They'll need the money to bail out Greece, Portugal, Italy, and most of the EU.

Locked.

If this is the same slide to unlock patent that was brought up in an earlier case, it's pretty specific and pretty easy to work around.

Android is kicking Apple's butt in Germany:
http://www.mobilemarketer.com/cms/news/research/11772.html
So they are getting desperate.

Thanks for posting this. Pretty much sums up the root of most of their suits

If this is the same slide to unlock patent that was brought up in an earlier case, it's pretty specific and pretty easy to work around.

Except the slide to unlock mechanism is probably centuries old, just applied to a 21st century medium. And that Android has never had a slide to unlock that resembled the iPhone unlock in anyway more significant than a gesture. And since 3.0+ did away with that ideology entirely with the Globe unlock . . .

Its desperation, and they have the cash to burn.

Apple files lawsuits like I play online FPS games. Just shooting in every which direction in desparation, hoping to hit something. I always run out of bullets though.

Droid Life is a joke of a source to use. Can you just link to FOSS patents? At least their article has some depth.

Edit: I guess I'll add my opinion to this too. It looks like in ICS google changed the whole 'slide to unlock' mechanism so I have no clue why apple is suing them.

I find it pathetic that they keep suing Samsung outside the US just because they have a bigger chance to win there.

Apple would get destroyed in a US court for their stupidity.

Makes you wonder why Kodak, who is bankrupt and forced to patent troll is only going after Samsung? Kodak has patents that cover very broad and simple things, that every smart phone maker is a target, yet they didn't go after Apple as well? Just Samsung?

That's weird.

The Nexus S slide to unlock is WAY more similar to Apple's than the Galaxy Nexus.

Apple has always maintained a limited number of products and models preferring to put great emphasis on each product and model, however there lawyers are practically carpet bombing lawsuits with no end in sight.

I'm with Bateleur here ... Apple needs to be fined HUGE for this nonsense -- say about $5B. That might not have stopped Jobs but I think it would put an end to this crap with the current management.

Sadly, I think we can expect a lawsuit-a-week from Apple. When you see the once dominant position of Apple errode as it did 25 years ago with PC's it's hard not to think Apple is trying to prevent with lawyers what they haven't with engineers!

Why sue Android? WebOS has the same unlock feature from possibly the beginning.

This is how I see Apple now.

You can't fine Apple for doing what is 100% allowed by law.

You should fine whoever issues these patents.

And it's not desperation. People need to get that out of their heads. A company that has profits like Apple isn't desperate for anything , it's just Apple haters who have this weird thought. Apple targets Germany because that's where they have the most to gain. Apple makes shit tons more money than Samsung they just want more. Desperation is for people like BB who are going out of business.

I mean seriously use some business sense people. Desperation? Really?

As I said in another thread it's risk vs. reward.

Worse case for Apple it's the cost of the lawsuit.
Best case for Apple it's monetary reward / increased sales due to decreased competition.

They can afford the lawsuit loss no problem. If they win just 1 injuction they will rake in millions more.

Apple is playing the system. If it is to stop the system needs to be fixed.

Actually you can find against a company like Apple that abuses the system BECAUSE there abuse cost others money!

Apple is going after Sammy in Germany because they had earlier success against them there and it's a big market. Apple is going after Sammy in general because the success they've had against them in the past is building to a pattern they hope to use to go after the real target -- Google/Android.

Go after the easier target to build legal momentum then take on the real target and hope that momentum kills off your main competition.

I've owned 2 iPhones and 2 Android phones and if Apple were the only choice I'd be stuck with 3.6 inch screens because Jobs said it was perfect with no need to enlarge. There are far more smart phones being sold today that are larger than 3.6 inches than Apple sells. Yeah, the few models Apple sells are still the top sellers but the Galaxy SII and other Sammy phones have Apple worried -- believe it!

Of course a company is always worried about competition. But Apple is far from desperate is what I'm saying.

. . . Android has never had a slide to unlock that resembled the iPhone unlock in anyway more significant than a gesture.

I've seen a lot of different unlock methods on Android devices. I don't know what the one on the Galaxy Nexus is like, but I know that there are plenty of alternatives so utterly unlike what the iPhone uses that Apple wouldn't even bother; or in the event that they did, the case would get tossed out of court rather quickly.

Its desperation, and they have the cash to burn.

Desperation to go from ~60% profit share to 70%? I honestly feel that these lawsuits have more to do with Jobs feeling betrayed by Schmidt regarding Android in general and Samsung borrowing heavily from Apple's designs, and less to do with actually getting more market share.

Well, to be fair, Google did steal a BUNCH of Apple IP and abuse their patents in Android.

Who is the moron who issued such an abstract idea patent and why are such patents allowed?
