Apple has been suing everybody forever. What, Apple was once saints or something? Microsoft is actually more well-known for being sued than suing others.

Actually that also stands the other way as well, Apple actually gets sued more then suing. As mentioned before it just doesn't get mentioned probably it does start a good argument as Apple being patent trolls.

The problem comes from Apple bringing something out and competitors rushing to copy it. It happened with System 6, OSX and now iOS, Android is getting the brunt due to Schmidt being on the Apple board when iOS was being developed and then changed Android from a blackberry clone to a iOS clone.

Technology changes. Touchscreens replace buttons. Would have happened without Apple too.

However the fact remains that they did reinvent the touch screen on mobile devices. They were the first to have a multi touch interface on their phone and the first to bring out a tablet that offered the same thing. They redesigned the UI of a phone to match having to use a touch screen to make it more fluid. Like it says in Steve's biography, they wrestled for weeks till they found the slide to unlock method.

The bottom line is that yes, it would have happened without Apple, but it didn't. They changed the face if cellphones and tablets forever and the world is a better place for it. Without the iPhone there would have been no Android. Just look at all the devices trying to copy both the iPhone and iPad. It's astonishing.

Neonode had slide to unlock before iPhone. If they wrestled for weeks trying to find it, they should have done better competitor research. The screen technology evolved, the interfaces evolved with it. And there would have been Android without iPhone.

But are those really inventions or merely well thought out designs? You don't see bmw suing almost every car manufacturer for copying their halo lights. Apple may have set the trend, but to patent that trend? Thank the useless us patent office that relies on patent fees to sustain itself.

I think Steve felt betrayed by Schmidt.

I think this sums it best.

Android would have happened without the iphone, since it was in development just as long, if not longer than, the iphone. However, the Android of 2007 looked nothing like the Android that was released on the G1. At best, 2007 Android was a cross between WinMo Standard and BBOS at the time.

The Neonode was junk. I highly doubt it would have carried out what the iPhone did with the smartphone industry. Of course tech happens eventually, but Apple was the one that actually did it, so I don't understand what the problem is.

There is no point in arguing with some people on these boards. They go to great lengths to credit companies that don't even come close to deserving it. On the flipside these same people go to even farther lengths to justify why apple doesn't deserve credit for something they clearly did.

Absolutely useless to argue with these people. Their head is clouded by their hate. Its pathetic.

It may have been junk, but it had slide to unlock before the patent, making the patent invalid. A Dutch judge has already explained that to Apple, but they aren't about to let that little nuance stop them from suing Samsung.

One of these days, threads like these will become productive and introduce new arguments that haven't been repeated a million times. Until then, they will force mods to step in, issue warnings and infractions. I get that they are (remotely) related but do they really belong in the MD&G forum?

You're the same way. That's why I rarely post here any more, all you guys argue over the exact same thing over and over.

Man, there is nothing in the above two paragraphs that's even slightly true. Ugh. The history of modern electronics did not start with Apple, despite what the iFanatics think.

Patent registration tells a different story. Especially when Apple owns the majority of them in question.

How come apple keeps on getting credit for other people's inventions like that?
First to use an existing technology in a new way =! inventor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch
Multi-touch has been around since 2001. iPhone was the first PHONE with multi-touch jan 2007. But the tech has been in the market for 6 years already and is in no way an apple invention.

Inventing a multi-touch screen? that deserve a patent.
Taking the existing invention of multi-touch tech and putting it on a phone? that doesn't deserve a patent nor is it an act of invension.

I was off skiing today with the kids and just got back home now. Based on the last dozen or so posts, I'm locking.

As far as Rick James Astley's comment about these threads being off-topic. I disagree. In my opinion the current litigation is setting the stage for the future of the mobile computing device. What is going on now is something akin to the jockeying at the start of a race as the "sides" claim their turf and draw the lines and whatever other mixed metaphors I can throw at this. In a perfect world, it's absolutely on topic, and it's absolutely worthy of discussion - because there's very few things that will have a bigger impact on what the future of mobile devices looks like than these legal shenanigans that are playing out in the world's courts.

I will continue to let these threads go for as they seem to be vaguely productive and I will attempt to moderate them to make sure that the forum rules are enforced and we are having as interesting a discussion as possible.

But this one is locked.
