My understanding is that the S8 loses a little bit of battery efficiency if you run it at the native resolution, but it's not dramatic. Enough that Samsung had reason to lower the default resolution, but not so much that you'll regret bumping up to 1440p if you set your expectations accordingly.

I don't really notice any difference in battery life between HD and UHD resolutions. Maybe I would if I had two phones next to each other and did the exact same thing with them all day at different settings but my battery life is far more dependent on my usage pattern varying that the resolution.

Go get out an iPhone 4 and an S4. To me the 4.3inch 480×800 S4 is much more pleasant to use than the 3.5inch 960×640 iPhone 4.
The size of the 3.5 screen is pretty horrible for web browsing.
 
You're also arguing about stuff that the general population doesn't give 2 shits about - numbers. As long as it looks good and works that is what most people care about. Obviously on a tech forum here we're a bit more informed, but general users aren't infatuated with any of that shit as long as it works and looks good.

I'm 100% positive that my wife and all of her friends don't even know what 1080p even means let alone care as long as they can look on Facebook and text message on their phones with it working and looking good.

It's no secret that Android markets more towards techies with all of their customizations and commercials. And Apple markets towards everyone else.

I dunno. The android "big screen thing" was definitely a populist move whereas "retina" was definitely a pseudo science numbers marketing thing.
 
I didn't see "retina" as anything other than a hot (at the time) new buzzword, just like the "cloud" is now a days.

Except that "retina" is now synonymous with Apple whereas "big screen" isn't synonymous with Android.

I did kind of facepalm when they were hyping up the new devices having "ultra retina". Reminded me of Nintendo and Super Nintendo then Ultra 64.

And thank goodness they did. I'm now holding in my hand the best smartphone screen I've ever seen on the Note 8. And I have multiple generations of screens to compare it to from my note 3, note 4, s5 and s7e, as well as my wife's iPhones up to the 6.

Much as I was one who once said I'd probably never need more than 720p.... meh! I was just flat out wrong. This screen is so much nicer to look at and do anything on.

On the note, resolution makes a difference when drawing and sketching with the stylus. At its highest res, the feel of the pen is near perfect. There's actually a function to the screen beyond just it looking good. If Apple would ever make an iPhone pro with a mini pencil I bet suddenly a lot of iPhone users would rave over it. Hell I'd even want one.

I don't think makers 'tripping over themselves' to add features -better and higher res screens included- has ever been a bad thing for consumer choice.

I wish Apple would do it more rather than hold out on basic features for years, or play 'add one feature, take another away' as much as they do.

The Galaxy S4 had a 5-inch 1080p screen! Maybe you mean the 4-inch Galaxy S that released the same year as the iPhone 4? If so, I saw that as a tradeoff. The Galaxy S gave you more breathing room, but the iPhone 4's visuals were just sharper and more optimized for high DPI. No screen door effect, either. The S II had a 4.3-inch screen, but it also shipped in 2011, nearly a year later. When the iPhone 4 was new, the gap wasn't as conspicuous as it was in, say, 2013.

We want resolution to be good enough. Not crazy enough.
The point of having a nice GPU and a low res screen is , the UI would run 60fps all the time and you wont see the frame drop you often see in android flagships like s8. Yes thats correct.
S8 frame drops are way higher than that of oneplus 5.
The website rendering gets yhe benefit too.

You think Apple's custom GPU can't drive 1080p smoothly, so that's why they gave iPhone8 750p? So that means 1080p iPhone8 Plus must be slow crap? Apple simply got 720p to squeeze out extra few bucks from the BOM compared with a 1080p screen, which is billions to its bottom line, not for your benefit.

Thats good enough. I know what Apple do because i know internal stuff. Obviously 1080p would be costlier than 720p. Im not an apple fan boy. I interchangeably use Apple samsung and sony devices for the last 10 years.
I love Apple because of these adequacy and simplicity. These are subtle points and not everyone can understand. Just like not everyone can understand miltons poems or khalil jibran's writings.

Nexus 6 had a similar back and had wireless charging. I had a wireless charge pad and I never used it with that phone. I guess we will find out Oct 4. Either way, both are flagships with flagship pricing.

I'm not even one to complain about what things cost (when the value is there) but obvious storage gouging is someting consumers shouldn't put up with.

Why doesn't apple offer a 128gb iPhone X? It's either 64gb or 256gb. 128 is perfectly ideal but they don't offer it either, at least from what we know. Maybe in the future? I absolutely don't need 256gb and I can do fine with 64 but 128 especially because of photos.

I customize my Nexus 6p a lot so I download a lot of mods, backups, roms..which you normally don't do on an iPhone wasting up space. So if I were to go iPhone I think I would be fine with 64 as the default since I can't customize and load stuff on it.
