I don't see the big deal here. Sounds like MSFT has an ad where they either state or imply that you can't get an apple laptop for under $1,000 and now that apple does have a laptop for under $1,000 they don't want that ad to run anymore.
this is a first for me. im speechless @ the guys in this thread who cannot grasp the basic premise of the laptop hunters commercials.
but im sure they get those dumb im a mac commercials right away. simple commercials for simple minds. i guess everything has to be spelled out for them, even if they are complete lies and propaganda.

And LOL @ the stupid Mac fanboys in this thread. The whole point of the PC ads, as everybody said, is to show people they can buy a good notebook at a great price. Keyword is value, not fruitcake. You can buy a whole lotta PC power with 1K, where as you'll only get a small underpowered macbook going Mac.

Microsoft starting to get their shit together now. Windows 7 is almost certainly a winner, and they are starting to put out some good marketing.
Now what Microsoft need to do is buy out a starter PC company, and make a new "high end" brand pc and call it Fruit. Sell it for twice as much because its cool. Hire some gay ethnically ambiguous person sitting in a coffee shop lisping about how "it just works". Then take pot shots at the "established" pc makers (apple, dell etc) and say they're the little guy with a superior product. Win.

But the Lauren one has been torn to pieces by many tech sites.
They basically set a constraint that made buying an Apple impossible and then had her pick the cheapest PC with a 17 inch screen she could find.
Think of it this way:
Imagine if Kia gave someone $13,150 and said go buy a four door car with AC and an automatic.
The person then goes to a Honda and Toyota dealer, but cries that they don't have enough to buy one of those 'cool' cars and then drives off in a new Kia.
We'd all be laughing our asses off at Kia if it tried that.

I don't see the problem, Apple has never really targeted the value market. I doubt it's the advertising campaign that's making an impact, if anything is hurting sales it's the global economy.
Apple could try and upsell on value that is included in their laptops but that'd be tough to get into 30s spots and still isn't going to help most consumers justify spending the extra money.
All in all, it's a good spot for MS and perhaps Apple will come out with a value series laptop--but I won't hold my breath.
