Apple announces OSX Lion

I still don't like that you have to keep the installs on your hard drive. Xcode and now Lion.. ugh.. there goes 8GB.

You need to keep the installer too? That sucks.

So with Lion Server, I am wondering if I should sell my Snow Leopard Server and just got a basic Mac Mini when Lion Server comes along. Probably not worth the trouble though.

Yea, that's how Xcode is currently working. I haven't installed DP4 yet, mainly because I'm on a hack and not sure how that's going to update yet.

Is DP4 out? I haven't checked for updates on my Air in since before the keynote. I just hope it fixes what they broke with DP3.

Will there be a Lion Server? I figured the killing of the Xserves would also include the server branded OS.

Look up top for my post. Its a single app, $50. (Not sure if you can use it on all of your authorized machines, but probably not, with current key usage mechanisms.)

Seeing as how we use OS X Server on a daily basis to support ~10k users I highly doubt OS X Server is going anywhere. The full OS is gone -- but not the actual server software solutions.

The only thing we're worried about here is the NetRestore and OD stuff on a massive scale, I have yet to see anything regarding that listed for Lion Server.

I at least like the option of having physical media for OS installs. I'm going to be a bit leery of this new release if they don't at least include it as an option. Don't get me wrong, I think that it is great t hat they offer it in the app store....but making it exclusive is just dumb.

Right now it's only available through the Dev Center. I'm guessing they aren't going to be updating via Software Update. I really wish they would though as having to create an upgrade boot drive is going to be a pain every time there's an update. There's one more thing pushing me to just buy a legit Mac.

Well, the programmers need to get paid.

But not paid all that well, and of course, forget paying the advertisers, or the marketing department, or the R&D department or the designers.

$30 is a perfectly reasonable price for the OS. And, if Microsoft could find it within themselves to sell just 1 version of their OS, and for something less than $100 OEM then i would be onboard with their pricing as well.

Because I choose to do something else for a living. Who said it was simple? I just said it should be cheaper.

And how would you feel if someone came back to you and said your work was worth 1/10th of what you thought?

It's obvious you've never done any amount of development work so I don't even understand how you could begin to put a price on a software product. Even the OSS zealots out there screaming that everything should be free and open sound more reasonable than your $10 price tag.

this is why I laugh when programmers pirate music/movies.

I've done over 20 years of developement work. It's not like Lion is leaps and bounds different than SL. 10 bucks as opposed to 30 bucks is resonable. Remember way back like 20 years ago when MS had a minor update to DOS 6 ( I could be wrong on the version) and sold the DOS 6.2 for 10 bucks to users who had 6? I feel this is the same.

Relax guys, its not like I said APPLE is the DOUCHE for even charging for this crap!

Leaps and bounds is probably a stretch, but I don't see how you can complain about $30 for something you'll get years of use out of.
