Appendix - the final bill.

The hospital finally sent me the bill for having my appendix removed a few weeks ago.

Hospital bill: $27,997.xx
Insurance adjustment: ~$25,xxx.xx
Insurance paid: ~$2,497.xx
I pay: $50.00

So tell me... who got ripped off?

The person without insurance that gets a 28k bill but told they will reduce it to 20k since they need help.

Wow, they charge $28,000 for an appendix removal?

It's no wonder so many Americans are going bankrupt from medical expenses, even when they already have insurance.

Think about your experience the next time you hear hospitals and doctors bitch about Medicare covering only XX% of the bill.

...your appendix got ripped off.

Wow my bill was 37k I had no insurance at the time and signed up for that assistance program at the hospital. They sent me a bill of 10k.

Only an uninsured person get's charged 28k. It only actually cost the insurance company $2,500. No one got ripped of, OP, but you would have been had you not been insured.

$30,000 to get your Appendix removed? BS!
Look at it this way: Law of Opportunity Cost. Assigning a surgeon, OR, surgical staff, recovery room, equipment, supplies and drugs that could have gone to a different operation.

If you can do it cheaper, consider doing it (may I suggest DIY?). :colbert:

I thought prices were so high because of all the uninsured dead beats refusing to pay.

Looks like the insurance companies are the ones refusing to pay the most.

What's fucked up is that the insurance company only paid $3000. That means that if you were uninsured you would have to pay the full $28K. What a scam.
