But where is Waldo? That's the highlight of the whole movie.
Gibson gets my undying respect for adding Waldo.

Interesting review.

That is an interesting read. Lacking the degrees this woman has, I cant argue with her issue regarding how the Mayans were depicted. However, I do not agree with her when she says the ending presented the Conquistadors as being their 'saviors'. I interpreted it to be the opposite, their destruction.

She got the movie wrong on two points:

The child oracle made it very clear that Jaguar Paw would destroy the urban Mayans not save them. The Europeans would bring disease (Smallpox killed millions) and conquest.

There is a key line during the sacrifices where the priest says the sacrifices are (roughly) "our warriors giving themselves willingly." That is the corruption of the urban Mayans, that they are no longer willing to sacrifice themselves for their God, using captives instead.

Great movie. Enjoyable from the opening scene to the closing scene. My only regret is that I only rented this instead of buying it, unlike what I did with Children of Men that was a disappointment in comparison.

Everyone should at least Rent it, it's worth $3 easily.

I liked it. My best friend who is an archeology grad was geeking out the whole time.

..that's who advised me to see it. Gibson went thru great pains to capture the culture and language. Great movie. Very lush highly detailed video. I hear he did it all in digital. Do a google on Maya culture. Many of those big pyramids are still around.

I enjoyed the movie - but was a little dissapointed - it was billed as one of the most violent movies ever made - and it definately wasn't. As a fan of of horror movies, that was a little dissapointing.

I dunno about that. The guys skull being crushed by the jaguar, the dude watching his own heart beating, heads rolling down the steps, throats sliced, and more was all pretty gory and violent.

"I hunt in this forest as my father did before me and my son will after I am gone!"

love the overall movie in general...the scene where they were dancing, worshiping, and chopping people's heads off was not so good.

Not too many dissenting opinions here it seems like...

I watched the movie, not expecting much, especially I've never really liked any of Gibson's films. This movie doesn't amaze me either.

I feel no connection to the story, I didn't care about the main characters, and it feels like the movie isn't moving in any particular direction. The plot is lacking and almost non-existent. I'm not a movie critic by any means, but I just did not enjoy this movie at all. A couple of the gory scenes piqued my interest a little, I'll admit, but beyond that, it felt like there's no substance.

I won't say it's one of the most voilent ever. It's not a horror movie by any means, but the gore factor is more than I actually expected. I would not recommend young kids to watch it even if they are use to watching Rated R movies. Most horror movies fail to pull me in like what this movie did. I guess it is the suspension of disbelief thing because this movie is based on actual events (perhaps more loosely). Imagine the rape of your village, where friends & family are systematically beatened, killed, and hauled off to slavery or much worst, being lined up for sacrifice. The journey to the temple itself is riddled with bodies of your people. I don't know about you, but that is living hell.

Excellent movie. I love the attention to detail and the historical accuracy of the film. Definitely showed the brutalities that the Mayans carried out upon their captives and even themselves.

I loved it. When they first entered the Mayan city I was in awe. The sets, costumes, and overall atmosphere were just increadible.

how fast can jaguars run in the wild? I just remember the scene with the jaguar chasing the guy and thinking either he has godlike speed or that jaguar is slow.

I interpreted the same way you did.

*minor spoilers*
I thought this was a terrific movie.. It was one of the rare flicks that actually invoke a feeling. For me, it was dread. The part with his dad, and his wife and son really got to me.. I couldnt imagine the hell of him having to sit there and watch captive while the whole scenario played out.

I think that I really identified with him as a protagonist because of that scene. The whole rest of the movie, I was worried what would happen next, and relieved when the tables began to turn.

Even as the movie ended, the overall feeling didn't lift. Sure he reunites with family, but then the Conquistadors show up to unleash an all new kind of hell.

I think I liked it an extra measure because I hadent heard too much about it, so I wasn't expecting such a good flick.

It was a good brainless action flick, nothing more, or less than I expected. Too bad he couldn't have gone to all that trouble and made a decent story out of it.

I honestly believed the Spanish were already on the continent due to the opening scene where they run across a huge group of people moving to start a new life. Then later when the slave traders were walking them and the little girl has the disease. I got the impression they were in a time period on the decline of the civilization and the disease the Spanish brought was already making its first impressions.

Then the ending with the boat kind of threw me off. But I definately didnt take the Spanish as any kind of saviors. Only that the hell that was currently going on was just the tip of the iceberg.

I had zero interest after seeing the commercial but my wife wanted to rent it and so I sat through it with her. It kept my interest the entire time. For the people who say it was gory, it was not, except for the *SPOILERS* akjsdhkjashdkjas - head-chopping thing. That's it. None of the scenes near the beginning where they were fighting to keep from getting captured was gory AT ALL.

*END SPOILERS*. It could've been a ton worse but they kept from doing that. As for the thrill and excitement of the movie... I was pleasantly surprised... the back of the box was right... exciting stuff.
