Is this deal still on tomorrow?

Hey Nerd,

According to VCDHelp (a site I have great respect for), the AD-1500 plays pretty much anything you throw at it. The only thing it doesn't seem to support is the WMA format.

And yes, this deal is on till Saturday ... that is if you can find one in your local CompUSA. Mine had only one left, so I picked it up even though the box was open.

Great DVD player for the bux! In addition to VCD (still not sure about SVCD), it plays MP3-CDs, though the on-screen interface isn't the best.

The CD-ROM hack works great. Mine took all of 30 seconds to complete.

Once again, the CD-ROM flashable models have a serial number printed on the outside of the box that begins with an A, B, C, or D.

For the record, mine is one of the "C" models.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with the Lenoxx? According to some stuff I browsed thru quickly on vcdhelp.com, it appears to play most formats...and is hackable....what's it missing? One person reported "One of the features that I really like on the [lenoxx] player is the ability to fast forward through SVCDs. The Apex 1500 is never able to fast forward through SVCDs."

So maybe it even has some advantages? I'm just wondering if I should jump for one, at least as an alternative if no Apex are in stock.

I tried some Pinnacle Express burnt SVCD's in an Apex 1500. The menu does not work correctly, and I don't think it fast forwarded or rewound correctly either. If you want to play home burnt SVCD's try the Apex 3201 - $69.99 at Amazon.com. Both my parents and I own a 3201 and they have played all my SVCD's flawlessly.

my old apex has no problems with svcds in any way (fast forwarding or otherwise)

of course, ymmv since they got sued for not paying the royalties and changed the later models functionality

Upgraded the firmware using the CDR method last night. Worked smoothly and took only about 45 seconds :D

Now only if someone could get me a rebate form ... please ?

The Apex 1500 is an amazing machine!! Get the hacked firmware and you are set with no macrovision or region coding or the other digital DVD protection scheme (forgot the intitials). The picture is GREAT and this will play anything you put in it...no skips or stutters!!!

The free ET makes this very hot!!! Off to get a second player for a gift...

Went to the norwalk ct compusa (only one in CT that has the apex 1500 in stock). Item rang up as advertised 79.99 with 20.00 rebate. Forgot about the free ET dvd, will have to go back and get it. 60 bucks + free dvd aint bad either. BTW all the ones in this store are high up in the corner (over your head) stacked above the xbox games. Over 30 available. Has A in front of serial number, so I guess these are flashable.

good luck

Could someone please post a scan of the rebate form or e-mail me a copy ! Will HIGHLY appreciate your help

If someone is willing to snail mail me an actual form (or a photocopy), that is even better. Please PM me if you can help.

THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE !!!

Thanks for the reply, Jack !

Wonder why they are doing this differently ! Also, not sure why they didn't print a form for me. I specifically asked for it and they said they are going to get some forms this week and will call me when they are in ... which I highly doubt.

Unless the printouts are unique (have a unique code or something), I think I should be able to use it as long as the original UPC code is enclosed. So could you please post a scan somewhere (or e-mail me a copy. It will at least be better than what I have now (nothing!) !!

Much thanks !!

Got 1 in Pittsburgh (Robinson TC). They had 10 more. Had to mention about ET DVD but no problems. It also rang up at $80 b4 rebate but still a good deal. Now I've got to go flash it.

PSx, sorry but no rebate receipt. Clerk said it is the other dvd that has a rebate. Hope someone hosts the scanned receipt so we can get a copy.

da nerd
edit... if anyone can show me step by step how to flash this dvd as mine starts with A on the serial number. It is kinda hard to read the steps and sift thru the info on the firmware site. TIA

Okay, that's fine ! Thanks for trying. I am pretty sure though that the clerk was clueless and you *should* have gotten the rebate on this. The last page of the CompUSA ad clearly shows that this DVD Player (AD 1500 SKU# 290622) is eligible for the $20 rebate ... so you may want to go back and ask them again.

I called CompUSA customer service (1-800-COMPUSA) and they told me this is a "point-of-sale rebate", so a rebate form should have been printed for me with the purchase. I am planning to go to CompUSA tomorrow with my receipt and ask them.

My player starts with an "A" too ... and flashing it was a pirce of cake. Here is what you need to do.

1. Download this file.

2. Unzip the file and you'll get a single file called U1500AM.ROM

3. Burn this file to a CD-R or CD-RW (I used a TDK CD-RW and it worked fine). Use ISO9660, Mode 1, Track at once, closed CD. With Nero use ISO 1 MODE 1 and click DOS in the Character set.

4. Turn on the Apex AD1500 and insert the burned disc. Screen will go weird and the name of the file will appear on the upper left then "writing" and finally "done", screen will blank and the tray will come out. The whole process took less than a minute for me. The machine may power off at this point (it didn't turn off for me, so I waited 2 minutes and turned it off myself).

5. Turn on the player and immediately pull out the disc. Don't worry if you don't see the "words" on the screen, just let the process finish.

6. If your flashing succeeded, you should see the background change like
this

If you have any questions, e-mail me.

Good luck !

Thanks for the reply PSX. I'll try update later after work. Anyways, even without the rebate, I'm pretty happy with this deal.
Thanks to whoever posted this deal BTW.

Their webpage says Modesto store has stock: that was the only one with stock that came up in my (post-trip) on-line search
