Apartment/Salary Question

I'm going to be living on my own pretty soon (actually, w/ 2 other roomies), and was wondering how much you guys pay for rent. I only make around $35k a year, and will be paying $900 plus utilities in about 2 months.

Uhh...methinks you ought to be finding a much less expensive place to live!!

Heh, I thought you might live in either NY or Cali. Where in NY are you moving? Most places in NY seem to be about $1200 for 2 bedrooms in Queens.

Do you need to have a car? If so, that is a bit tight.

Yeah, and my car insurance is about $1600 a year and my gas is about $230 a month.
That's almost 42% of your salary and that does not include utilities or food.

I'm not actually moving, my family is moving upstate to Orange County and will be leaving me the house here in Long Island. The rent will be $2700 a month for a huge 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. I will be sharing it w/ 2 roommates. I'll have the biggest room w/ private entrance(s).

$900 is way too high man..plus the $1600 for insurance is a rip.
Car payments too ??

I make $43K and pay $300 rent. No car payment. $50/mth insurance.
What a setup I have goin on right now 🙂

Ok, your NET is about $2100/mo...right? You're spending about $1600 for your car insurance, rent, utilities/cable/internet, fuel, and groceries.

That leaves you $500 for car maintenance/taxes, clothes, bills, etc.

I have no car payments, I own my car. I think my girl may help me out w/ $300 a month, so it will be $600 a month for me plus utils.

$1363 + Util on 35k. That's pretty tough. You'll likely only be taking home $1800/month. Can you cover entertainment, food...etc on $250 - $300 per month? I know I need about $800 for that. I live in NYC, though.

That's seriously pushing it, but it's your choice to throw the majority of your salary down the drain like that. I'd find something more reasonable, save, and invest.

I pay $435.xx month for my 4 bedroom house on 2 acres, its about 14 years old, but still in exc. condition.. (not renting, mortgage payment) That $ includes insurance and taxes as well! I will never move to LI if it is that expensive.

Ouch. Are you paying rent to your parents or are you assuming the mortgage payments? I'm just curious if at least you'll expect a decent amount returned during tax time or not. Tho' I guess then your name would need to be on the deed.

BTW, I do think that you should look for a cheaper apartment, perhaps something in the $600/mo. range per person + util.

It's a waterfront house in an affluent suburb (3,000 Square Feet).

Fair enough... that is still alot of loot for your first time being away from the parental units.
