Heh, I thought you might live in either NY or Cali. Where in NY are you moving? Most places in NY seem to be about $1200 for 2 bedrooms in Queens.

I'm not actually moving, my family is moving upstate to Orange County and will be leaving me the house here in Long Island. The rent will be $2700 a month for a huge 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. I will be sharing it w/ 2 roommates. I'll have the biggest room w/ private entrance(s).

Ouch. Are you paying rent to your parents or are you assuming the mortgage payments? I'm just curious if at least you'll expect a decent amount returned during tax time or not. Tho' I guess then your name would need to be on the deed.

BTW, I do think that you should look for a cheaper apartment, perhaps something in the $600/mo. range per person + util.

I'm paying rent to my sister. I will be paying $600 a month, my girl is paying $300 (though she won't be living there).

Sounds like a waste of money to me. Find a cheaper place to live and save money. Then buy a house.

If you live in NY, I'm guessing thats only about $1800 take home.
If you were smart, arrange it to where all your bills are around $1200. That leaves you with $600 extra every month to work it.

i make less than that and pay quite a bit for rent.

AND I SHARE. a studio. in LA. 571/month for my half. woohoo! car insurance is about 180/month (only over 9 months though, and had put down about 300 something) (and it better go down when i renew in july), food, utils, student loans, life.

i'm one broke person but i scrape by every month. you'll be amazed what you can do. for instance, eating out twice a week (that means two meals total out of the 21..) becoming a costco nut, shopping for bargains, clipping every coupon you can find, etc etc.

its the price i pay to live away from my parents. i'm not leaving CA anytime soon though.

Funny thing is that my sister recommended that to me when I got out of college, now she's suggesting that I stay and pay rent.

$462 a month + bills (utils, insurance, cell phone) = ~$700 . Salary = $11k + fin aid, grand total roughly $20k.

I know it is hard to hear (I was your age too), but spending a lot of money on rent is a total waste. It goes down the drain and yields no financial benefit. Find a cheaper place to live and toss the difference into a 401K.

She's taking her own advice at your expense. If there's any equity involved down the line, the least she can do is share it with you.

Do you need to have a car? If so, that is a bit tight.

Yeah, and my car insurance is about $1600 a year and my gas is about $230 a month.

Ok, your NET is about $2100/mo...right? You're spending about $1600 for your car insurance, rent, utilities/cable/internet, fuel, and groceries.

That leaves you $500 for car maintenance/taxes, clothes, bills, etc.

Uhh $1600/year == ~$133/month

That's a sweet deal for her considering the tax breaks that she receives for you paying her mortgage. However, as long as she could get that rent from someone else, I guess there is not much you can do other than beg.

Even if you are paying a $100 less than her mortgage, do you realize that see probably has a 30k tax deduction at the end of the year due to mortgage interest + property taxes. That means the $2800 she pays is really more like $1800. Of course, there are other expenses to consider when owning a home. I'm just saying that your sister could be giving you a better deal if she really wanted to.
