Propecia is expensive. About $300 for six months. And insurances don't usually cover it.

Only common side effect seems to be a slight decrease in sexual desire (libido). It's not really that evident, and I think after I continued with the drug for awhile it went back to normal. My gf could attest to that.

Yeah I pay $47 a month for it. Generic versions will not be allowed until 2005 I believe.

I have had no noticeable side effects. Insurance generally does NOT cover Propecia for this purpose.

However some Inusrances do cover the use of Propecia for males with enlarged prostates (which requires a higher dose than for MPB). So some guys with both problems are able to get Propecia under their prescription drug program. Propecia will "kill two birds with one stone" in those situations.

Have you ever heard of cutting Proscar into fourths for the same finasteride effect?

Does Propecia actually regrow hair or just stops hair loss?

I'm only 21 but I'm probably going to need it in the future (I've always had thin hair and an awful hairline.

Been doing this for about 6 years. Rogaine and Proscar/4 . I'm not sure how much re-growth I've experienced but I do believe it has helped primarily in the crown area. I also can't remember the last time I've noticed hair on my bed or shirt. Overall, I would say that in the last 6 years my hair loss has at least stabilized w/ possibly some improvement . My hair is noticeably thin around the temple but I keep it short (#1 clippers).

If you can, go to a dermatologist w/ your father and ask if they can prescribe proscar to your father. It will look normal to insurance companies. Then buy a pill splitter in the pharmacy and you're all set. This way, it's about $5 for a 4-month supply.

Much better results than what I had with Rogaine, and without the flaking or irritation. Too early to tell just how much it's going to fill in, but it is definitely helping. Not using the HGH that's listed there, just the Zinc/B6 with some lemon juice [about 1 ounce per batch] added for vitamin C.

Anyone else trying this concoction?

Actually, while propecia works very well, one of the best ways to regrow hair (even in the frontal areas), is a combination of rogaine and Retin-A (usually prescribed for acne) applied topically. This combination is being tested right now to find out why it seems to work better than rogaine alone.

I've heard a little about Retin- A for thinning hair.

Any other suggestions?

I see that there are dozens and dozens of "treatments" for balding out there but I'm sure some are "old wives
tales" and some are from swindlers and some are probably dangerous....

Has anyone found anything that helps or works for them?

Take care.

Shave your head and shine it. I have an uncle who does it.

If you're old enough to bald, it'll take 50+ years off ya

propecia and 5% rogaine seems to be working ok for me, it's been 3 months so far and it looks a little better. any other chemical is probably snake oil, and your only other alternatives are tupees, transplants, or shaving it off.

My hair started thinning when I was 24, and 5 years later, if I can still grow a full head, but the top is much thinner.

Two years ago, I went for the shaved head. When My wife first saw me, she said, no ###sy for you, b/c she didnt' like it at all. At that time, I was goinog with the razor shaved head.....but there's a mole on the back of my head that I always cut the everliving sh!t out of when I do that, so I've just switched to using a barbors hair trimmer (whatever they're called with the attachments) and shave it wihtout any attachments once every two weeks.

I love it. It took a lot of getting used to.....but it's definitely the best way to go. Now my wife rubs it for good luck---and has goten used to it and likes it.

THe best part is that with the shaved look....I still notice that my scalp-line is thinner, but my hair's so short, I could give a flip. I don't feel gay in front of the mirror anymore looking at my hair strands, or worry about what falls off when I shower.

I admit I looked into Rogaine and Propcecia.

Rogaine got the fart-on-it b/c it's a lifetime treatment. It works in the majority of cases (don't rmember the %) to regrow hair, but it's about $30 a month, and once you quit using it, you lose all the regrown hair.

Propecia got the no way in hell b/c some of the test group experienced sexual dysfunction.

There's other methods out there----avacore for one that are more natural....but getting myself used to shaving my head and what it looks like allowed me to lose whatever vanity I thought was torturing me when I first realized that my mother's father had indeed passed his recessive gene through the generations.
