UPDATE 11-25

super busy with work, holiday, and other stuff, but I made a lengthy post on what the process was like...lots of TL;DR probably, but here it is :

TL;DR

I feel like my interviews went great, I never felt like anything was over my head, at all, everyone that interviewed me said I did a great job.

I just wait to know if I have an offer or not, can take 1-3 weeks to get back to me on it.

I am curious, they are flying me out to a location to interview me in person, woohoo!

I was wondering what the process was like? This is a technical position (Level 3ish), not a programming position.

What kind of people do they prefer? I assume open minded and all that, which is what I am 8).

Anything I should watch out for, or really prepare for?

Honestly, I am just pumped they're flying me out for an onsite, anything passed that is just awesome :).

UPDATE 11-15

Just got my flight confirmed, cost them $1,100...oooft. They are paying for hotel + car rental + fuel + $35 allowance per day.

Congrats on the interviews. I have a good friend that works in their Chicago office and visits NY quite a bit. My wife actually worked for a company based in Google's NY office building (the one they just bought for a few billion...pocket change). My friend absolutely loves working there.

Hope you get the job!

GO GOPHERS!!!!!

I know a few people at the NYC office. I keep getting recruiting requests from them but they don't pay enough and the projects in NY are not that interesting to me.

Sounds like it went well. I think you have a pretty good shot at getting it.

If you get it, you buy me a beer in Ann Arbor, ok?

I went through the whole process about a year ago. Aced the phone interview and got invited for the on-site. This was for a technical "hardware" position, which in reality is just glorified server maintenance from what I was able to gather.

The interview was not terrible, except for one interviewer who asked a very difficult question and gave next to no hints whatsoever on how to solve it. I'm fairly sure I didn't get the job because of how poorly I did on his question. From what I have heard if you don't ace all of the individual interviews your chances of getting the job are slim. Also, Google is the only company I've seen that makes you put down your actual GPA in your application so even if you did interview well chances are they wouldn't hire you unless you had a stellar GPA. As someone who's given out nearly 30+ interviews, I can whole-heartedly say this is complete bullshit. We've brought in dozens of 4.0 candidates that couldn't work their way out of a cardboard box.

At the end of the day, depending on what you want to do Google may not be the best fit for you. For someone like myself, who is more interested in low level firmware/hardware Google would have been an exceptionally poor fit. Focus on finding a job that fits what you're interested in, instead of being lured into doing something you aren't just so you can say you work for company "X".

It's not low at all. It's at the city average. I'm just over-payed right now and don't plan on changing that ;)

good luck Vivi!

Dwell (or anyone else), what is the average salary for someone working in NYC? always thought it would be cool to work in that city.

thanks!
