$1100 for flying across 1 state wtf? Must be Ann Arbor.

Yup, that is their only office in Michigan as far as I know. My guess is it was such short notice, so the airlines jacked up the price..but man, gouged!

technically the flight is 2 hours @ 550~~ MPH, so the distance is actually kind of far, surprisingly.

Drive would have been 10~ hours.

Hey if they pay well, you could be living like a king next to Detroit.

Booya....I would miss the Minnesota weather, and lakes...so I am glad it's in Michigan actually 🙂.

Either way, IF I get an offer, I assume I have more free range to move to a new city after a year or two.

They also do tuition reimbursement, which I am pumped for. IF I get an offer that's worth salt lick.

walk into the place wearing sweat pants and a tank top like a real G

(I once went to see a high-hourly-wage-lawyer and I swear that's what he greeted me wearing)

Can't wait ... but I do enjoy business casual...brown slacks with a button down shirt.

Now, if I could wear shorts to work, i'd be a happy man.

I read 'In The Plex' this summer... CEO Larry Page apparently still signs off on EVERY hire at the company, so you better impress *HIM* some how. Not sure how or why he does it with 25,000+ employees, and 4k-8k hired per year...

Read this book fast for some more ideas about Google.

And good luck! Put in a good word or two for me.. I'd love to be in Ops at Google..

why the fuck are the forums hijacking and redirecting links..?

good luck dude. I had an interview with MS before i graduated college and they flew me out to redmond and paid for everything, including a day there just to sightsee. I made it through all the interviews but messed up my last one. great experience though. they do ask some whack questions, as well as hardcore ones.

Interviewing at MS was the only interview that I can say I really enjoyed. I basically got to spend two days meeting a ton of really smart, interesting people. Spent the days talking about our careers, our personal and work projects, and working out puzzles. It was really fun.

Hope they accept you for a job offer!

Yeah it seems like a lot for the plane ticket, hotel, and whatnot, but that's just what it takes for companies to recruit talent and lots are perfectly willing to spend it. Of course, cost aside, that they are bringing you out is definitely one step closer.

Ann Arbor is pretty cool. I have some friends there. I live about 30 min north in hard as fuck Northville.

Good luck

The cost really isn't much to the employer. Hiring a bad software engineer ends up costing the company about $500k in the end (I've heard numbers like this from two different managers at two different software companies). So its really not much to spend $1-2k to fly somebody out. Heck, its not even much to spend $20-30k on a summer intern.

Yeah, it make sense in the long run ... I really do hope I get offered the position.

How long after the onsite interview does Google usually let people know the verdict? Or should I just bug my recruiter for feedback?

Hey, I am in Michigan. And Ann Arbor is very nice...IMO, the best place to live in MI. Good Luck OP.

...if your company has money to begin with, yeah. 😉 And it assumes that the management is willing to think long-term.
Getting a few hundred dollars of rather essential equipment can take a few months for me. :\
(Unless the owner happens to really want one of whatever it is. Then it might take a week, and the budget will be doubled.)
Google seems to have money to spare.
