Still is for me. I have never really found a multiplayer FPS that I enjoyed as much. I keep meaning to try UT2K4 or whatever the most recent one is to see how it compares.

You gotta try out the Shifter mod... so many enhancements, the game is never the same without it once you've played it.

As for how to play, if you want to be offensive you can capture the flag. Or play defense. Or snipe. Or fight.... which if you do I'd recommend an energy pack and get good with the jetpack/disc launcher/plasma combo. Well you should be good with that regardless of the position you play.

Shifter mod was the one all the HF servers were running, right?

I'm not sure which servers played it. IIRC there weren't too many... I'd just sort by game type or mod type or whatever it was.

And it didn't play well on someone's 800 MHz?! Jesus... did you have a 1 MB video card? ;)

If there's still players I need to get this again. Especially if there's a Shifter server runnin.

If someone would answer my question about

Estimated bandwidth required to run a 16-man Tribes server?

we could see if it's plausible to have an ATOT Tribes Server to go beside the Battle.Net one. :)

I think it was HaVoC that had the programmable missile launcher ... that was fun. Different warheads had different speeds, so you had to factor distance, flight time, etc into the firing sequence. Harder it hits, the slower it travels. Made for good strategy. Give me my LR Turret Buster setup (Heavy - Heavy - EMP - Medium - EMP) and I'll strip the outside of an enemy base before they even have time to react. The first EMP comes in a little early, the second EMP passes the Heavies just before impact, and the Medium splits the two for a photo-finish. :D

M4H: *fires salvo from afar*
Turret: *fritz*
Base defender: WTF was that?
Turret: *fritzWHAMPOWKABLOOEY*
M4H: *firing salvo 2*
Base defender: Where the hell did that come from?
Turret #2: *fritz*
Base defender: Aw, sh!t.

That game was so fun. I loved filling practically a whole Broadside base with defenses... force fields, blast walls, turrets, those annoying ass laser turrents. :D

Another fun thing to do was getting one of those portable bases (emplacement?) over close to the enemy base but hidden, setup some quick defense and radar, switch to heavy and stock up with mortar, commence destruction.

That would be awesome. I'd pitch in for that if it wasn't too much.

Tribes 1 is possibly my favorite game of all time. I preferred "base" games over all of the mods (most were too silly for me...I enjoyed the purity of the default).

My favorite map was called Snowblind. It was soooooooooo much fun to ski a Heavy over to the enemy base and mortar the hell out of it (especially the spawn points). More often then not tho, I stayed busy capping the flag and laying waste to others with the spinfuser.

I enjoyed that game so much that I honestly thought I had a gaming problem for a while. I am of the opinion that no other game has come close to being as fun with regards to constant action and overall simplicity in gameplay, but allowing for solid tactics. Most new games try to do too much and fail. Heck, Tribes 2 wasn't as good because of that. If the developers had simply redone Tribes 1 with better graphics and new maps to supplement the old ones, it would have been awesome.
In all my gaming days, nothing has been as satisfying as drilling someone midflight with a disc. I really miss playing Tribes.

There were ground emplacements, but also portable air bases. Maetryx and I used to get in an APC and fly up as high as the map would let us above the enemy base. Then we would deploy the air base, put a teleport pad there, then people could get into Heavy and drop down from above. Emergency shields would save you from dying due to the drop, even though the base was so high it couldn't be seen from below.

Once you're down, commence with the nukes and mortars. :D

Oh yeah, got to throw in my old TRIBES addiction story for good measure. I played TRIBES so much that once when I was working at my computer, I spilled hot chocolate on my hand and burned myself. I reflexively hit the "H" key for the health pack, even though I wasn't playing TRIBES at the time.

Once I saw an outdoor ashtray which looked liek a health from Quake2, and I started walking towards it quickly, before I realised what I was doing.

LOL. I heard of someone, don't remember who, swerving to avoid a piece of debris that dropped out of a truck in front of them that looked like one of the mines in TRIBES. I loved leading someone on a chase and just dropping a mine for them to run over. :D

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but if you want to play this, be sure to have a script running for skiing, which is like a constant jump that turns into smooth motion. Compare it to digital signals being used to convert into an analog signal :p
