Anyone used a Deli Slicer before?

Wondering if it can be used to slice bread. Started making homemade bread.

Got some cats trapped in a neighbor's apartment that you want to feed sandwiches to?

Try it and see. My mom had a slicer that could do both, but you had to switch blades.

Yep, I've used one. If the blade is sharp enough, cutting bread shouldn't be too hard, though.

Careful, though.

At my old work I got into big trouble for putting my finger into the Deli Slicer.

She got fired also.

It'll work. The blades aren't serrated so they won't tear the bread.

With a knife, sure, but with a deli slicer? I don't think you would.

You can slice anything with it, but you'll need a large one (15" blade or larger) for bread. A large serated knife works best though.

I've been cooking Gluten-Free bread and it's VERY crumbly. Makes it difficult to cut good slices :(

Maybe they're not all the same, but the one I used to use in a kitchen worked like this:

You cut off each end of what you're cutting (in my case, roast beef) to make them flat. You put it on this slider with a handle, and the flat side would be pressed up against this piece of metal. You push the sliding thing forward and it would push the meat into the blade, cutting at whichever thickness you selected.

I used this kind of slicer.

Thanks! I'm working on a good food-freezer system using a FoodSaver vacuum-packing machine. Since I have a gluten intolerance and I'm lazy, I want to buy big foods (meats, cheese, make breads, etc.), slice them, vacuum-seal them, and then freeze them for later use.

Used to work at a deli in college and we made all our own breads, bagels, etc. I have used the meat slicer many times but don't think I would use it for bread. We had a commercial slicer (kinda like this one) that we used and it worked great. The guys I worked for had been in business for years so I just assume that was the best way.

Looks like a printer.

But yeah, no reason to buy a meat slicer if you could just buy a bread slicer.

Yeah it's not a huge issue, I'd like to get a deli slicer in the future anyway for meats, just wanted to see if I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone ;)

I worked at Arby's for 3 years slicing meat on one of those slicers. It works quite well on a variety of items. I never tried bread though. Maybe you could do it, but unless you swapped blades, I would suspect you won't get very good performance.

I make homemade bread about 3 times a month. A $10 electric serrated knife is the BEST possible tool for homemade bread. Cuts like warm butter, actually, cuts better than warm butter. And it costs virtually nothing.

Try freezing it first. It makes crumbly bread easier to manage.
