I checked out the website...they are like $35

Details on how they work?

Its amazingly simple. Put the filter and coffee in the top and pour water in.

They work just like a coffee maker except you control the water. Most automatic coffee machines don't get the water hot enough for proper extraction. With this you boil the water first and then pour it through the coffee a little at a time making sure it doesn't overfill the amount of coffee in the basket.

It only takes about 3 minutes to brew this way not including the time to boil the water. You want the water between 195 degrees and 205 degrees.

Watch the video I posted.

yep, you dont actually need a chemex to do it either, you really just need something to hold the coffee filter over something so you can pour water in it. my buddy just uses something like this over an old school diner style coffee carafe

I have one of those. Mine's green. I got it for camping, but I also infrequently use it in the house. If I manually make coffee, I usually use a French press. I've also cooked grinds directly in the pot, but I don't recommend that. One thing I've always wanted to try is Turkish coffee. I need to get off my ass and make that happen.

The guy in the OP video is so full of shit. Counter-clockwise? Really? It's going to taste different than if I poured clockwise?

I don't really see the advantage of this over French press aside from the bit of ground that is leftover in French press.

For about a month, I was folding the filter full of ground beans, and using hemostats to clamp the bag...then putting it right in the hot water in the cup. Too lazy to get a $15 maker for a bit there :p

Anyways, that coffee maker looks cool.

I've heard that if you get the water level above the grounds level in the basket (which most coffee makers do, especially if you're only brewing a smaller amount) that it affects the flavor somehow. Not sure why, really.

Use that when camping. Makes some wicked good coffee. I boil water for wife's tea and my coffee on the stove.

Coffee is simple extraction. Temperature, time, and surface area all play a role in determining the level of extraction of coffee. So yes, I would say it has an effect on the final cup of coffee. A good one? Well that's up to the person drinking the cup.....

I never understood people drinking coffee. I guess I'm glad I don't have that dependency like my GF, "OMG I HAS TO HAVE COFFEE TO START MY DAY"

I drink it because I like it. I don't have to have it however. I scale back on coffee a lot during the summer because it is warm. Winter starts setting in again (like now) and I'm drinking it more regularly again as it tastes good on a cold morning.

Caffeine does nothing for me.

You're dependent on it then. I'm not really sure what negative side effects there may be with that. I think some people have increased blood pressure because of it but not everyone. Keep that in mind if your doctor says you have high blood pressure and wants to put you on those blood pressure pills (that stuff can be dangerous long term, kidney damage and whatnot). Try weaning yourself off the caffeine gradually in that case.

Caffeine doesn't wake me up, lack of caffeine doesn't give me a headache, nothing. I see no effects either way having it or not having it.
