My wife has a 13" Macbook (late 2009, 2.53), anyone try one of the 500GB hybrids yet?

What's the best way to 'ghost'/clone a macbook?

CARBON COPY CLONER!!!!

Aah, that felt good... :)

I have not tried one of them, but they seem very interesting. Based on what I have seen in reviews the performance is squarely between platter drives and SSDs, so if you don't balk at the price, and don't think that 500GB will be wasted, then I say go for it.

The price at $120 seems like a no-brainer.

I mean, compared to the cost for a 512GB SSD then it is damn near free, but that is more, and at the same time, less than what I was expecting.

I have been using a 500gb XT in my 2010 13 MBP for almost a week now. Boot times were drastically reduced after two or three reboots. Times were around 50s with the stock and less than 20s now. Also my most used apps load almost instantly. It really is a great buy right now with SSD prices so high.

I used Carbon Copy Cloner. It worked fantastic. Word of advise, after you clone the drive the first boot may be really slow, if so once in OSX go into system preferences, Startup Disk and choose the new drive, mine defaulted to Network Boot and than added almost a minute to my boot times!

Thanks for the feedback...have you noticed an increase in drive noise or vibrations?

I'm close to buying an optibay + SSD, but after reading your post...

May I ask what are your most used apps? And you had a 5400rpm as your stock HD drive?

PS, here's my thread

I'm seriously considering one of these, as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more reviews.

Google Chrome, Pages, Lotus Notes, Apple Mail, iTunes, Adium, iCal and WoW. All of them aside from WoW load much faster almost instantly, WoW loads faster but it's not a huge differance.

Thanks.
Was your old drive 5400rpm or 7200rpm?

Haha, nice! I also saw this combo with 8GB RAM that's tempting...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.444817

Need to find a US friend to ship it to though ;)

dammit! i bought the bare drive from compusa/tigerdirect yesterday for $129.99 plus tax. stupid newegg, i checked the prices all week and it was at $124.99-$129.99 and yesterday out of all days, it jumped to $136.99 with $6.29 shipping! i decided to say screw it and buy it at the compusa/tigerdirect place in naperville because it was actually cheaper! its a 45 minute drive to there though. ah whatever, probably isnt worth returning thanks to gas money/time wasted.

good combo deal though! once 8GB drops to $150 or below, im getting it. over $200 for 8GB is still too pricey for me...

8gb ram and 500gb XT owner here in a late 2009 MB. Upgraded from the 250gb 5400 and it was hella faster. Well worth the $130 for the drive. 8gb was only due to OS prototyping and dev work. It also made a quite a difference.
