Anyone think the F-250 is a bit overkill for a daily commute?

Wooop, there it is. :)

BCYL, what about sports cars? corvette, Porsche, BMW M5? are those not a waste?

Strictly for commuting, I'd call it overkill, but if the driver wants it, more power to him. Personally if I ever get a truck I'll look for a stripped down F-350 Diesel because if I have a truck I'm going to beat the crap out of it. Can't see myself driving a truck every day though, just not the feeling I like.

Ah crap. I'll go ahead and say this - I really find any vehicle that is longer than 200", has a turning radius of greater than 40', and gets less than 15 MPG in town as overkill as a daily commuter. I really don't care if it's and SUV, a full sized van, or a pickup truck. TO ME they just aren't practical. They are hard to back up, hard to park, hard to navigate on narrow street, ect.

A mid size suv, a compact/mid size pickup truck sure, a normal minivan with a good turning radius, fine. They are halfway managable around town and whatnot.

I'm not blasting things for being gas hogs or hazards to other drivers, I'm simply saying that for a vehicle that is used to get one person from point "a" to point "b" every day, they are not very good vehicles for the job.

I'm am not calling for a certain type of vehicle to be banned, I am not requiring special driving permits to be assigned, am not trying to be authoritarian here at all. Just wanted to get that out of the way :) I'm just simply saying that there are more practical vehciles for the job.

I've always wanted a Super Duty F-350, with quad cab, long bed, and duallies... lifted, of course...

Problem is, with the distance I commute daily, I would have to take a second mortgage out on my house!

My Dad drives an F-250 for his daily commute, but his company bought that one because they needed the extra towing capacity. That's all it's good for, really, since the size of the standard F-250 and F-150 cab is identical (actually the same cab).

i love the look of the f250/350's...looks so much tougher than an f150... i'd love to have one but i really wouldn't want to drive it everyday either.

Absolutely excessive if daily commute means shuffling John or Jane Suburbanite off to their tree-lined suburban office park. My neighbor used to have a Heavy Duty F-250 with the yellow lights on the roof. He was a pool cleaner or something like that, but his truck bed was almost always empty. It was a case of a short man with probably a short member needing a big truck to soothe the ego. Ridiculous. The best was seeing his truck slide all over the damn street in the snow because it was RWD. This guy had so much attitude, he would just floor the engine to get through the snow and the tires would spin like crazy. I was hoping that the tires would finally grab and he'd launch his truck right through his living room window.

Yes. I like the 250/350 very much and I think the 150 is fugly. In all honesty, I didn't know there were two diff versions (body styles) of the 250. I thought it was either 2 or 4-wheel drive.

The F150 has a sloped-sided cab and isn't all that big inside. The F250 has cab sides that are straight up and down giving much greater room inside. I do like the 4x4 4-door longbed versions...they sit about 2 feet higher than my Trooper (that's pretty darn high) and really look like whatever they can't roll over, they could roll through! :D

As far as the practicality of being an everyday commuter goes, that depends on a couple of things:

1. How much money do you have? I.E. can you afford TWO vehicles? the truck and a Geo for commuting? Many folks cannot.
2. What do you do for fun/spare time? Do you tow a boat? Go 4-wheelin? Help friends move often?

In a "big city" like NYC/LA/Detroit/etc, a big truck is a PITA to drive and park, but in a "big" small city like were I live that is 1/2 city and 1/2 countryside, a pickup is a very practical decision.

Sometimes I order a whopper combo with supersize fries and drink and thats over the edge also, but , and here's the important part, its my choice and I can afford it so no matter what anyone else thinks, I know I'm getting exactly what I want.

Ford F-250 owners are no different.

Where I live there are a ton of two lane roads without shoulders that go on forever. I drive a Honda Accord EX wagon, and, in the Summer, often tool around in my Fiat 124 spyder.

I have absolutely no problem with the farmers, independant building contractors, and such that have every need for truck. As a plus, these guys know how to drive, and they don't tailgate me while talking distractedly on a cell phone like the trophy wives imprisioned in their Excursions , Yukon XL's, and Suburbans!!!!! These biatches imperil my life, and I don't like it one damn bit.

Through the years, throughout all the many phases, fashions, and fads, I have always favored ricer efficent wagons, or mini-mini-vans, as I explained them to uncomprehending others during the mini-van craze. I happen to like that balance between efficency and utility. My Honda handles well, accelerates acceptably, gets decent gas mileage, is car comfortable and manuverable, has the nearly 360 degree visibility that is one of a station wagon's hidden assets, and can handle 98% of the stuff I ask it to carry for me. I also like it's looks, especially with it's sport wheels.

But one of these days a soccer biatch is gonna kill me. I can show her my brake lights and they still don't seem to comprehend. Aaaarrrggghhhhhh!

i have an F250 crewcab superduty (i.e., heavy duty) and use it to commute.

it IS overkill, but it makes sense for my family's vehicle situation.

If you need it for other things on the side it's definantly not, if it's in the hands of one of those guys who doesn't know how to adjust a Trailor Brake Unit or even knows what a Load-Leveler is yeah, it might be some overkill ;)

I daily drive my truck, but I also use it for truck only functions all the time.

thats kinda my question tho, unless you have a real good reason, i can't justify getting an f-250 over an f-150. but that's just my opinion.

Yes, those are a waste too... why would anyone want a "pure" sports car for daily commute? You would rarely go that fast anyways... (well, maybe except for the M5, since it's sooo comfortable and nice inside... can be a form of enjoyment)...

But if you compete in road racing, drag, etc... it would be ok... same deal with trucks... if you actually use it to haul load once in a while, I can accept it too... but let's face it, how many ppl who drive full size pickups and SUVs go off-road or haul some load??? Most of the time I see those full-size SUVs are soccer moms...

With these cars, you are just wasting fuel and populating the environment for nothing... That's also one reason I dont really mind those compact SUVs... most of them are low emission vechicles, and they dont use up much more gas than a regular car...

Dear Doc.

I know. He's trolling. You're feeding the fire of a "debate" (and I use the term loosely), that has spawned hundreds of threads in AAT in the past.

Give it up.

Your friend,

Slag

My buddy, who happens to live in California, supercharged his F-150.

Basically, he now gets approximately 10 miles per gallon...and can only put in 91 or 93 or whatever gas.

He commutes over an hour every day to work.

That's pretty excessive if you ask me!

I think he wants to buy a little Honda sometime....

yeah, the only thing I can think of at all is you cannot get the Diesel unless you get a 3/4 ton anymore

I think it's excessive, but that's just me.

I also wish gas was $4/gallon. It would be nice to see more SUVs in front yards with for sale signs on them. Then I could pick one up cheap.

you'ld pick one up cheap then pay a fortune just for the gas. why not just buy one now for more and pay less for gas?
