This is really wierd. I was looking at PCI express cards and noticed that the 6800 vanilla lost to the 6600GT in everything. Something seems a little off there. what do you guys think

Maybe cause the 6600GT is clocked 500/1000 and the 6800 is only 325/600. Memory bus, amount and pipes didn't matter as much.

wow didnt know the 6800's slow mwmory as further downclocked fom the agp version. i knew the 6600gt pcie was oced memory from agp version though. weird how nv would od this.

u can unlock the remaining pipes to 16 but that still doesnt make it an Ultra!! it got a lot slower ram!

well that article does seem a little off...the 6800NU should be able to beat the 6600GT in most benchmarks

no you cannot. sorry, bue you cant unlock ANY PCI-e 6800s physically different core. Only agps can be unlocked and those for the most part top out at 128mb memory at 700mhz vs 256mb of memory at 1100mhz.(unlockable 6800's memory wil never each 6800 ultra speeds, and even if it did, you only have half of it available on the 6800gt or ultra.)

Heheh...another reason not to believe Tom's Hardware. Yeah, something is far off. The 6600GT is schooling the 6800NU at everything. Here's some benchmarks you can actually trust:

If you don't believe that site, check out Anand's inital 6600GT article as well, but all the cards in that comparison were AGP versions so I didn't post it. However it's hard to say because at some games, even at that site, the 6600GT is beating the 6800NU even at high AA/AF. Very odd...(though in all of those scenarios both cards yielded less than 45 FPS, not exactly playable). One of the 6600GTs in that article is overclocked unlike the other cards.

Actually the 6800NU in here is AGP so it has a slightly higher memory speed. In any case, a 6800NU will beat a 6600GT, especially at new, shader-intensive games and high levels of Anti-Aliasing/Anisotropic Filtering. The 6600GT manages to pull ahead a little bit in Pure Speed benchmarks because of its much higher clock speed, but the difference is negligible. Right now, there is not much difference between a 6600GT and 6800NU for current games. Come next generation however, the difference between the 6600GT and the 6800NU will get larger because of the 6800's pipelines. Also, its doubled memory will help it at high resolutions (at least one resolution up), and/or bigger textures. Let me tell you, though, that the (at least my) 6800NU (PCI-E) overclocks extremely well. Check my sig for clocks/scores.

THe half life 2 benchmarks at tom's looked really screwed up. A single 6800 ultra was beating two 6800 ultras.

Could be because of overhead, unless it was not within the margin of error. I was neutral about Tom's Hardware, but the moment I saw a 6600GT owning a 6800NU I knew never to trust their benchmarks.

Tom's Hardware was always okay. Somethings were wierd but only by a small margin. Like you said though I don't think I really trust the benchmarks anymore.

I am downloading the Riddick demo now..

Is it that stressful on the highend systems? Or is it coded poorly?

Some of those framerates were TOO low..

Even with the SLI setups..

It seems coded poorly. When I played it on SLI'd 6800GTs it was very laggy and the graphics weren't that great in my opinion.

Definately in AGP form at least

AGP 6800 has 325/700 speeds and 128mb of ram, their version is 325/600 256 ram..hmm weird.

I know this is a video forum, but speaking of tom's hardware, their Pentium M gaming benches have showed up as well...it's doing pretty good.

B3d's SLI article, and another site I can't remember, had the 6600GT whupping MSI 6800NUs- in total contradiction of my findings with eVGA 6600GTs and Leadtek 6800NUs, as well as Firing Squads.

I think there are some BS PCIE MSI 6800NUs out there, and otherwise reputable review sites are getting non-standard results with them. Even a 325/600 6800 at least matches a 6600GT in every spec that matters, it shouldn't be any slower. (let alone a lot slower)

there were so many versions of 6800 cards released....altho a lot never seemed to actually be available to buy..lol

i do remember seeing one that was 6800nu, but with 256Mb GDDR3 ram, so that could be overclocked (with extra cooling) to 1100mhz ram, but the core could still only go up to something like 350...however from what i remember it only had 8 phsyical pipes, the others did not exist at all.
sadly this was aaaggeess ago now so i dunno where i saw that...lol

You cannot unlock a PCI-e 6800nu to 16 pipes for the simple fact that the core only HAS 12 pipes total. The "unlockable" 4 remaining pipes do not exist on the PCI-e version.

So, your stuck at 12 no matter what. Which isn't a bad thing. The only thing you can do is o/c.

And no, there is no bios flash that creates 4 extra pipes, just in case you were thinking of mentioning it. 😉

It the B3d article, and Wavey Dave said to me he realized that the 6800NU results should be impossible given the 6800 has the same fillrate, higher memory bandwidth, and more shaders, but that he wouldn't change the results he posted until someone gave him new cards as those are the accurate results for the cards he tested. Another site posted similar results with MSI cards.

You can see my results, and Firing Squads, fall more in line with what you would expect from the cards based on the specs.

If you want to think 6600GTs beat 6800NUs, that's fine, but they don't. I've tested both and the 6800NUs smack down the 6600GTs at 16X12 4X8X.
